Crystal Cove BFI - Full Park Loop (Intermediate/Level 3)

Time: 8:00 AM - Plan on arriving 15 min early if you have not been here before or want to use the bathrooms at nearby sports park

Level/Pace: Intermediate

General Rating/Difficulty: Level 3: moderate or strenuous for elevation, distance and pace. CLICK RATING TABLE to read more about skill levels.

Pace: Medium

Length: 10 miles with hills

Duration: 3 hours plus/minus depending on speed

Directions: From Newport Coast Road take Ridge Park Road uphill until it ends at intersection with Coastal Peak Road. Trailhead is at the end of Ridge Park Road. Park along the road and meet at trailhead.

Description: Beautiful ocean views and fresh sea air! This hike runs the boundry lines along all four corners of the Crystal Cove backcountry for a full park loop. Besides several smaller hills there is one big/steep climb (1 mile, 1,000 ft up) after we leave the ranger station along BFI and Moro Ridge.

We start at the Ridge Park entrance in Newport Coast at the top of the hills for free parking. Our route will take us down Pacific Ridge, No Name Ridge and No Dogs trails to the ranger station (bathrooms and water available) where we will stop for a short break. From the ranger station we will hike up the infamous BFI (the name of this trail will become self evident) to Moro Ridge trail. We follow Moro Ridge trail to Bommer Ridge road and back to parking.

*** Hike Update #1 as of Friday, Dec 2nd ***

    >> Present yo-self! Arrive early (7.45am) instead of late (8:00AM, hike start time). Allow time for your drive and mind the red lights, cyclists and detours you may encounter on an early Saturday morn.

    Link to trail head: https://goo.gl/maps/KNb5pCtMPW92

    >> Commit yo-self! Bring all new and familiar smiles. No flaking (i.e., canceling after I enjoy my evening sleepy tea).

    >> Know and nourish yo-self! Bring at least 1 liter of water, a snack for 10-minute ranger station stop and layer up and down. Sunny and 50'ish degrees @ start, 70'ish @ finish.

    >> Orient yo-self! We are hiking 10 to 11 miles, making a full loop around the park. The group will naturally break into 3 groups (fast, not fast enough and just happy). No "official" sweep in the wilds of Newport Beach. Refer to park map link below:

2017 is near, the year to find adventures everywhere! I will post a hike-specific update tomorrow with respect to Crystal Cove logistics, but would like to promote our upcoming 12/30 and 12/31 NYE event. Our recent Joshua Tree event in November was a huge success, Anza on NYE is going to be a par*teh, and we will rock Mecca come late January. Come Spring 2017, we'll stop and smell the wild flowers. Be great!

Is the elevator part of this trail?

    November 27

    • Gerry D.

Hi KK, no elevator on this particular route but we will need to smash a fun and nasty hill aptly called Big F$&@%! Incline", or BFI for short.
