I am calling this an Exploration Hike, because I've never been there. This hike plan is based on the research I have done.

This is a moderate-pace hike on the back country trails of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park ( The actual path and hike length will be determined by who decides to show up.

Sorry, Dogs are NOT permitted on any of the hiking trails in the park.

## Key Info:
## Parking fee is $3.
## Meet and Greet at the Nix Nature Center at 9:20 AM.
## Hike Briefing at 9:25 AM.
## The hike departs promptly at 9:30 AM.
## Trails are subject to closure right after a significant rain. Check the Comments for updates.
## If you arrive late or otherwise choose to do this walk on your own, just follow the directions detailed below.

Length: 5+ miles, about 2 - 3 hours, with ~600 ft gain/loss

Difficulty: Depends on the actual path that the group chooses.

Pace: Moderate (~20-30 minutes/mile)

Description: We will start at the Nix Nature Center, which is easy to access from the 133 Freeway and has nice facilities. The hike will proceed to cross under the freeway to get to Barbara's Lake and the James Dilley Preserve on the other side.

There are several loops shown on the hike map (see Photos). There are some steeper sections that will give us some conditioning workout.

Sometimes we may see some wildlife: quail, hawks, roadrunners, bunny wabbits, and if we are very lucky, maybe a snake or a tarantula.

Rating: Level 2 to 2+ - Click here for hike RATING TABLE (

Parking: There is a dirt parking lot at the Nix Nature Center. Parking fee is $3 at the machine. GPS Address: 18751 Laguna Canyon Road
Laguna Beach, CA 92651. See the main entrance in the Photos.

Facilities: The Nix Nature Center has a Visitor's Center with a few exhibits, rest rooms, and a sign-in desk for the trails. Everyone needs to sign in before we start the hike. There is also an outside deck with a few chairs, if anyone wants to bring their lunch and have a little picnic after the hike.

What to bring: Water, maybe a snack or lunch, sunglasses, sturdy hiking shoes, maybe hiking poles if you have them, a hat or umbrella, a happy attitude and a big smile!
