This is an overnights trip for New Year Celebration. Highly suggestion on carpool and share room as it's Winter time (a bit too cold for camping, some booked at Best Western Plus in Carpinteria, some booked at Motel 6 Carpinteria North)

Meeting to carpool in Orange: either Orange Park and Ride or arrange with your carpoolers.

Meeting in Santa Barbara: 8:30AM @ Best Western Plus Carpenteria lobby and caravan to the trailhead together or you can meet with us at the trailhead 9AM (see driving direction below)

About the hikes: HikingOC 1st Hike of 2012 out of town with exploratory hikes in Central California. Main Hike: Santa Ysidro Trail. Greg Willardson describes on Daykations: an incredibly beautiful out-and-back trail in the Montecito foothills (Santa Barbara adjacent). This is a "must do" hike in this area. It's a moderate hike of about 4.4 miles roundtrip, 2.2 miles each way. There is a 1100 ft elevation gain, and there are somewhat strenuous rocky-trail inclines when nearing the waterfall. Features: running creek with numerous small cascades, 80 ft waterfall, beautiful wooded environment with shaded trails.

Then optional for more if we all have energy for it: drive together to West Fork and Tangerine Falls. This hike takes the West Fork of the Cold Spring Trail to Tangerine Falls. It is located in the Montecito foothills. This is a beautiful area in shaded woodlands with a lot of creek action. It is really nice after rains when the creek is running full. It is a moderate-to-strenuous out-and-back hike of about 4.0 miles roundtrip. It takes about 1.5-2 hours of hiking time. There is an elevation gain of 800 ft. The things most people will like about this hike are that it is mostly semi-shady to shady, has nice creek and water cascading action.

Driving Directions:

1. Trailhead to San Ysidro Trail: Monecito is adjacent to the eastern boundary of Santa Barbara. Go to Montecito via the 101 Fwy, and get off where convenient for you. You want to head north up into the foothills and get onto E. Valley Rd., between Sheffield Dr, to the east, and San Ysidro Rd., to the west. From whichever direction you approach it, go north onto Park Lane, from E. Valley Rd., heading further up into the foothills. You will come to a 3 way fork in the road, take the left most road onto E. Mountain Dr and drive down to the end of the road, about .25 miles or so, and look to your right where you will see a trailhead sign (see slideshow). Park anywhere on the side of the road. Follow the trailhead sign on the north side of the street to get onto the trail

2. Trailhead West Fork and Tangerine Falls: Take the 101 freeway to Montecito. Get off on the Olive Mill Rd exit, and take Olive Mill Rd north towards the foothills. This street becomes Hot Springs Rd which you continue to take north. Turn left on East Mountain Dr. and go about a mile until you see the creek flowing across the road. It's hard to miss finding this trail as the creek runs straight across and on top of East Mountain Dr.
