Do you live in Pasadena or a surrounding city in the SGV area?  Are you currently homeschooling or thinking about homeschooling?

Then this is the group for you!

Homeschool CTY Pasadena is a group for parents and their kids to build a diverse, supportive community in Pasadena and the surrounding SGV area. We are inclusive of all secular or faith based instruction and welcoming to all homeschool ideologies from unschooling to charter schooling. Whether you stay at home or work full time... or even if you're just curious about this whole homeschooling "thing" ...families with children of all ages are welcome.

Join us to create a close group focused on nourishing their children with their time and talents, connecting, building community, and sharing resources, while allowing their children to interact with kids of all ages and backgrounds who are raised to be kind, loving, and respectful to themselves and others.

The name Homeschool CTY (pronounced city) stands for Critical Thinking Youth, but members of all ages are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and look for answers throughout our homeschool journey together. This community provides a chance to explore, learn, and grow in a safe, welcoming, and fun environment.

What Activities Are Organized?

The list is open ended, and we continuously seek to benefit our members in the best way we can; as such, we keep trying to figure out the best set of activities to achieve this goal. We consider the interests and needs of both the kids and parents in the group when selecting activities to offer our members.

This group gives kids the opportunity to meet for regular park days, nature walks, field trips, community service projects, dine outs, movies, festivals, cultural events, or even a day at the beach! We intend to plan both educational and just for fun activities based on the belief that learning can take place anywhere and that social and emotional learning are just as essential to healthy development as academic pursuits.

This group gives parents the opportunity to share ideas and experiences, provide academic support and guidance to one another, and even coordinate co-op programs. Parents can contribute their time, talents and skills toward subject areas such as: cooking, language, gardening, sports, scouting, writing, STEAM, multicultural studies, meditation, photography, drama….really any subjects that  meet or members interests and needs. If you are a parent that (or knows someone who) would like to impart specific knowledge about a subject, please let us know.

What Do We Expect From Our Members?

We plan to meet at least once a week, usually at a park, but members can also suggest their own Meetup ideas to add to  the calendar.  As members of the group, we pledge to share our talents and skills by demonstrating, guiding, and teaching our kids while having fun.  In addition, we strive to support and encourage each other as home educators.

All members should join expecting to contribute and remain an active member (attending at least one meetup per quarter). Any inactive memberships of over 3 months will be removed. Participation is important. It's not a 'meetup' if you never attend an event.  Membership is at the discretion of the organizer(s), and any member request without a clear profile picture or sufficient answers to profile questions will not be approved.

Please be sure to R.S.V.P. 'YES' if you intend to go.  A 'NO' or no answer will be considered the same. Life is busy and if no one wants to attend, we may change plans for the day. If you happen to show up at an event with limited resources without a  'YES' R.S.V.P., you or your kids may not be able to fully participate.

Also, if you are not already aware , Meetup.com charges the organizer $160 per year to just have the Meetup group site, so donations to help with these administrative costs are greatly appreciated.  You can donate in-person when attending a meetup ($1/family recommended) or by using the "Chip In" button on our Meetup website.  Please note that membership fees are not mandatory, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Will You Join Us?

Time to play and meet other like minded families and parents who value alternative educational opportunities for their kids. If you are new to homeschooling or if you've been homeschooling for years, we can all learn from each other's experiences. We look forward to learning, sharing, and creating with you and your kids. Join us in our homeschool journey and share your fun school day ideas!
