Mead Making!!!

  • Jan 21, 2012 · 2:00 PM
  • Mountain Lakes Organic Coop

Let's make that Mead already!

Who wants some honey wine?  I know I do!

Let's make it together.  We will discuss some of the basics of this wine making technique, talk about the "must" haves, & see a few examples of locally made mead.  We will also start a batch of new mead, rack off an already fermented batch, and bottle some mead for longer aging.

Please expect to be somewhat entertained, semi educated, and slightly tipsy (with knowledge) by the time class is over.  We will have some examples of single racked, double racked, back-sweetened, fruit amended, in-process, & fully aged mead.  We will also go over the steps of sanitation, the pros & cons of using sulfides, yeast selection & nutrition, sparkling mead, proper fermentation temperatures, racking techniques, time schedules, bottling, & cork selection.

The scope of this class is for small-scale mead making that can be done at home in anyone's kitchen.  It need not be complicated, time consuming, nor expensive... but it can be if you get lost in the minutia.  We will keep it simple, easy, and down to earth.

Please be at least 21 years of age prior to signing up (or at least 21 years of age by the day of the event).  You are also invited to some mead sampling after the event so please plan accordingly.

There is a limit of 12 spots for this Mead-Making get together as well as a $25 charge so please RSVP early if you plan on attending.  (This event is being cross-promoted on other Meetups and may reach capacity before showing here.... we'll let you know.)

Educational and fun at the same time. Makes mead making seem very do-able. Great group of people.

Paul is an excellent instructor and prepared a lesson plan that was thorough, engaging and informative. There is certainly a craft and science to making mead. The group was also receptive to the demonstration and processes while sharing related knowledge and experiences. The hospitality provided by Marni topped it off. Cheers!

Sorry for changing my RSVP but it's still snowing heavily and my street hasn't been plowed yet.

I'm sorry I had to change my RSVP. I ended up getting hired by company that wants me to work this weekend. Have fun, everyone!

Hi April in Jan! We'll all have the know-how to make a virtually unlimited supply once we're done so no need to purchase any mead :o) . Call me later (or post them here) if you've got any more questions... all these, & more, will be answered on the 21th. Talk to you soon!

Can I buy a bottle filled with fermenting mead, plus supplies? What is the percentage of alcohol, and is it similar to wine? Thanks!
