Thursday Jazz at Carnegie's (56) Sty Laroque

We've set up a weekly, free, Jazz concert/open mic at Carnegie's. This is what people have been asking for, a great line-up of musicians along with some great food and drink from Carnegie's.

When: Thursday 7:00- 10:00 PM
7:00 - 8:00 Concert from the Feature Band
8:00 -10:00 Jazz Open Mic

The Band : Sty Laroque

Carnegie's is offering two set dinners.

Menu will be announced next week.

Here's some info on the band.

Sty Laroque is a drummer from the US. He has played all over the world and has just recently returned to Hong Kong. We are pleased to have him at Carnegie's. Jazz Jam

A jam session is where musicians get together and play. Jazz open mics usually attract a pretty high level of player and it can be magic when the playing starts. There's an energy from playing together for the first time. I am not calling this event an open mic. I am not guaranteeing performance time to everyone who shows up. You don't need to be great, but you must be competent. For vocalists, If you request a tune, you must have it memorized. No reading off of phones or cheat sheets. Though this applies to all performances at all open mics (just check out pics from past events), we will be enforcing it at the Thursday events. So, if you plan on performing, know your song by heart.

If you're interested in performing, but are new to jazz, I would suggest the following:

1. Pick a Jazz tune you know well.

2. Listen to a lot of differnt versions of it.

3. Play or sing with a backing track (a lot) and learn it by heart

4. Develop ideas on what you want to do.

5. Post the song on this event site.

6. Show up and perform with some top-notch musicians.
