• What's Up 'POTLUCK POP-UP': Language is Culture
    • What we'll do For this first meet-up and the next one, we will do brief introductions, I'll talk about the goals of the group, and we will discuss our first topic: He aha ke aloha: What is Aloha? Aia i hea ke aloha: Where is aloha? Great for... - international students studying English in Hawaii -local students interested in studying abroad or other languages and cultures -'Ōlelo Hawai'i speakers and learners -interested to share, learn, and cultivate Hawaiian culture 'Language is Culture' to me means that learning any language also comes with learning and living that culture as well. Although we may not speak Hawaiian fluently, there is so much to be learned and earned from experiencing Hawaii through the Hawaiian language. It starts with a few words, then simple phrases, learning the songs, chants, and prayers in Hawaiian language offers the best understanding of Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian thinking, and Hawaiian values. By the end of each meetup, I only hope that some new 'ike (knowledge) is shared and learned. I organize and lead the discussions and questions but learning is exchanged equally. • What to bring In case you don't know, potluck means everyone brings a food or drink to share to the party. This is a potluck so any food and drink is greatly appreciated. (Please let us know the contents for vegetarians and allergies!) Store-bought or home-prepared is great! Unique to your culture maybe. Finger-food is preferable. This isn't really a full meal, just pupu to snack on while we talk. A little goes a long way Bring a smile and a positive attitude 😎 • Important to know This is a chance to practice speaking, listening, and conversation while learning about Hawaii. A goal is to think about the 'power
