Night Hike Terry Hershey Park (6 miles)

Just south of the bayou on the east side of Dairy Ashford, you will see a Shipley's Donuts.  Nearby, there is a very tall building with an empty parking lot that backs against the bayou.  That is where we will meet.  It is on the map.Just south of the bayou on the east side of Dairy Ashford, you will see a Shipley's Donuts.  Nearby, there is a very tall building with an empty parking lot that backs against the bayou.  That is where we will meet.  It is on the map.

These hikes are great for first timers and kids.  They are not as long, hot, or challenging as some of the other hikes we do.  They are also a little slower pace.  They are a good way to test your fitness level without killing yourself.  Kids love the creepy night-time factor.  Do not be nervous if you are first timer with this group...you can walk up to anyone and they will start a conversation with you.  We are all very outgoing and friendly.

We will start out at the Dairy Ashford parking lot near the center of the trail. From there we will stay on the dirt trails headed east and back...finishing up back at Dairy Ashford. For those of you who attended the Memorial Park Night Hike, this will be more challenging with more ups and downs. Once we get to the turnaround point, you can choose to cross the bayou and take the sidewalks back to the parking lot.  Must of us like to stay on the dirt though.

Supply List: headlamp, snack, water, sense of adventure. I recommend hiking boots for this hike.

If you are afraid of the dark you are welcome to bring a rosary and a woobie. :-)

Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a leash at all times and must be friendly.  I am a dog fanatic, but there are NO exceptions to this rule.  We have members that are nervous around dogs.  If you take your dog off the leash, you will be asked to leave the event.  Thank you for being sensitive to others' feelings on this.

We'll plan to eat something afterward at Jason's Deli:   14604 Memorial Dr. 77079

Please leave home a little early to be at the trailhead on time, and please LOOK AT THE MAP before you leave so you know where you are going.  :-)

Ok all you veteran hikers.... I'm a runner, but this is my first hike. So, I'm sure I don't have the recommended gear. Will tennis shoes, jeans and a tshirt get me by for tonight's hike?

    May 16, 2013

    • Joelle E.

Maybe something besides jeans but everything else sounds fine! Wish I had boots, but I'll be in runners shoes.

      May 16, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

Actually, your hike leader is wearing jeans. :-)

On my way to check out the Westheimer REI before the hike. Haven't been there in a while.

Some of you first timers are nervous about coming out venturing into the dark woods with a bunch of strangers... I'm going to alleviate some of that by introducing you to a few of the hikers that will be attending this event. Tom P. is a veteran. He has had adventures all over the world and is very self sufficient and detail oriented. He can answer any question you have about camping, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and much more! Micah is a night hike addict. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and she always has a big ole smile on her face. Jesus is quiet when you first meet him, but he is also a night hike veteran, and he has a great sense of humor if you get him going in a conversation. Fatima is a kick butt and take names kind of hiker. She is on a mission (like many of us) to get in the best shape of her life. When she first joined us, she thought we would be taking some leisurely strolls. Boy was she surprised! She is inspiring and a very entertaining hiking buddy. TBC...

    • Fatima

Wow!!!!! What an introduction! Hello, hello and hello! Fatima is here. Jennifer you are a true jewel. I have missed you and all of our hiking buddies. And to the newbie hikers, there are no strangers in this group. I fell in love with the group immediately after beginning my first hike. At first I was intimidated by the posted number of miles of the hikes. I quickly forgot about about the distance and embraced the friendly converstations on my adventure. I look forward to another spectacular hike. Jennifer, your the greatest!

      May 16, 2013

    • Jesus

Thanks Jennifer. I'm actually kind of glad the event got moved because I wasn't going to be able to make the last one.

What time does the hike generally finish? Want to do one of these, just wondering how late I'd be out on a work night. Thanks!

    May 16, 2013

  • Micah

Never mind my earlier comment... My friend's actually celebrating his B-day on Sat. So, I can go!!! : )

    May 15, 2013

  • Daphne

Do you HAVE to bring a headlamp? Can you just bring a flashlight?

    May 13, 2013

    • Micah

      I love mine, too! : )

      May 15, 2013

    • Tom P.

Last week we didn't even need lights. We finished the difficult trials before night and walked back on the hard top trail with enough ambient city light to see by. But bring a flashlight just in case you want to walk back on the bike trails.

      May 15, 2013

  • Micah

Uh oh! I didn't realize my previous "yes" RSVP carried over from the previous hike that was cancelled and rescheduled for May 16th. Gotta' friend's B-day party to attend but if anything changes... I'll be sure to update my RSVP again. : ) Have a wonderful time!

    May 15, 2013

Anyone know the record for total attendance on any one hike; it's 115 right now...

    May 13, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

A few people will probably drop out. The largest number of hike attendees e have actually had turn out to a hike was 75 at a Memorial Park night hike. It would be great to break that record!

Lol, I HAVE seen that before actually! Dog strollers! They crack me up everytime I see them... Thats one way to walk your dog I guess. :) I have a dog cart that my kids ride in.... The dog pulls my "stroller" I guess you can say. :)

Hello and welcome Bryan. You will like our hikes. Jennifer picks out some interesting places. Terry Hershey is more local but, the night hikes out there are wonderful. What you will need are a good walking/hiking shoes, a hand towel, a head lamp for the dark, water, and a lite snack. Jennifer and the group usually stop at the deli afterwards to grab a bite. I might go this time. You are welcome to join us.

Finally some good news from my doctor. Several months ago I was told that my thyroid levels were really messed up, and I would have to take medication for the rest of my life. I became vegetarian in January. After a new thyroid est my doctor called today to tell me that my thyroid levels are normal! Thank you to everyone who has supported me in my vegetarian adventure!

    1 · May 10, 2013

I never took the medication, by the way.

I was sitting in the doctor's office receiving more bad news while I was watching the weather guy talk about the end of days weather headed our way. I double checked weatherchannel.com, and it said the same thing. I did what I thought was best based on the info given. I'm sorry it was not the right call. Thank you for leading, Tom. I appreciate it.
