Hike Terry Hershey Park - 12.5 miles

  • Dec 23, 2012 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Jean...this one goes out to you. :-) Keep your hiking requests coming, and I'll do my best to make them happen.

We will do the entire trail out and back. The entire length is approximately 12.5 miles. If some of you want to do just a one way trip, that is possible too. We should be at the Beltway 8 end of the trail by 11:30ish. You can park on that end of the trail and start with us on the second half of the hike. When we reach the end a few of us can shuttle you back to your cars. Another option is to start from Hwy 6, hike as long as you like, and then just turn around. But keep in mind that this is the time of year to really challenge yourselves with some extra mileage in the cool weather.

Trail Map: http://www.mountainbiketx.com/downloads/texas/maps/Terry_Hershey_II.pdf

We will do the south side of the trail (the more interesting side.)

Since not many people signed up for the after party, it has been cancelled. We will do a Mexican restaurant instead.

For all the people who want to meet at 5 pm at post oak ( uptown park) cafe express inside:
There is plenty of parking to leave the cars and carpool. So just be there, even if it rains, it may not rain by the time we start our hike!
We can carpool or follow each other to the hike. Makes it easier to find and park.

I am soooo disappointed! Have to bail. This is the worse possible weekend for me, but kept hoping I could make it work. I'll miss seeing everyone. I'll miss Terry Hershey. :'( Have fun & stay safe.

I have a dilemma. I just made a ton of fudge. But it's way too much for me and Josh. Where on earth could I find a large group of people who would appreciate a sugar high?

Someone emailed me asking if we will still hike if it rains. I look at it like this...if I were on the Appalachian Trail, and it rained one day, would I just hang out in my tent all day? No way! We're hiking "come hell or high water!" :-) The only reason we would cancel a hike is if it were dangerous. (flash flood warning, etc.)

    December 22, 2012

  • Jennifer B.

There is a parking lot on Hwy 6 for Terry Hershey. If it fills up, there is a bank next door. I don't think we would have a problem parking there on a Sunday. I'm excited to see so many newbies signed up for this hike! Once again...be sure to bring a layer you can take off easily when you warm up, bring plenty of water (more than 1 bottle), and bring a snack. See you all tomorrow!!! :-)

Can anybody tell me exactly how I can get to the beltway 8 meeting place of the park from Bellaire and 8? I plan to be there at noon tomorrow.

    December 22, 2012

    • Jennifer B.

Even though the park is on the southbound side of the Beltway, you have to access the parking on the northbound side. Take the Briar Forest exit. The parking is on the section between Briar Forest and Memorial Dr. It is under Beltway 8.

Great idea! the second half, if I don't go to Mexico by then. Will wait at Beltway 8 parking at noon tomorow.

    December 22, 2012

    • Jennifer B.

Since we have changed the start time to 9am, we will probably hit the beltway at about 11:30.

      December 22, 2012

  • Tom

I'd love to do the distance but don't have that much time.
Does anybody care to do the first half of the hike? I suggest a group meet at the Beltway 8 turnaround at 8:15 and carpool over to the start. Then, when we get to the turnaround we can drive back and be done.
    Anyone interested in doing this?

I originally planned to do a pre-hike of this trail tomorrow, but I have injured my ankle and back, so that isn't possible now. Don't worry...I am still doing the hike on Sunday. Jean has brought up that parts of this trail can be challenging. This will be a longer than usual hike. I just want to make sure everyone is prepared with plenty of hydration and snacks. Have a good carb-filled breakfast. After the hike, we are going to chow down at a nearby restaurant. Be sure to wear good shoes, and if you have hiking&liner socks, wear those. If you are fairly new to hiking, invest in proper socks (thick hiking socks, and a thin pair of liners. It makes a huge difference in how your feet will feel after a long hike. If you guys have any questions, please let me know. See you Sunday! :-)

Didn't mean to convey that the trail is challenging as much as it may take longer than usual to complete. Liz and I took lots of photos and explored off trail quite a bit, thus increasing hiking time. This is a bayou trail, not a wide forest jaunt, so we won't be able to spread out as much. There are alternative trails, which could help. A pretty big duck pond is at Eldridge, up high, away from the bayou and water from a metal culvert feeds a little creek, complete with small waterfall, not far from the pond, leading back to the bayou. Fun to explore. The biggest challenge will be finding parking space (at both ends) so think carpool! No chance of stragglers getting lost. Just follow the bayou, noting whether it is to your right or left side. lol. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do.

Just wonder how long will it take to hike 12+ miles and what I need to bring with me other than drinking water? Thanks!

    December 18, 2012

    • Jennifer B.

This will be about 4.5 hours. We will take a little break in there. You will need energy. You will definitely need some snacks...popular snacks are apples, oranges, bananas, trail mix, energy bars, pepperoni, or tuna. (You don't need all of those...just some options to choose from.) I also add gatorade powder to my hydration pack. I definitely notice the difference that I feel with some gatorade vs. plain water.

      December 10, 2012

    • Jennifer B.

The reality is that I can host this if I need to. I live around Hwy 6 & Hwy 59. I have a nice large HD TV. I just wasn't sure if people want to come to Sugar Land. I would hate to get everything set up and only have 3 people show.

Ted, no doubt Jennifer will be responding as well, but if you click on the trail map link, you will see the trail. There are two possible start points. Depending on where the party will be held afterwards will determine which start point will be use. Either off Hwy. 6 or off the beltway. The hike is in and out for about 13 miles or some might to arrange their own shuttle for a shorter hike. Anyway, the trail map link is accurate and helpful. The Hwy. 6 parking lot is on the west side of Hwy. 6 and is actually for Barker Reservoir hike & bike trails. The parking lot on the Beltway is south of Memorial just at Boheme. It's a nice hike.

I am so excited; this will be my first meet-up event. Besides plenty of fluids and a couple of snacks, what should I bring? Do you all walk fast? I usually walk 6-8 miles five times a week; should I start pushing it?

    December 1, 2012

    • Jennifer B.

No...you'll be fine. When you're hiking in a group the miles go by quickly. Our youngest member is 19 and we have members in their 70's. It's a good mix of all types of hikers.

Is there anyone who has an HD tv who would consider allowing us to use their house for the after party? I have an HDMI cable in case your tv doesn't have memory card slots or usb ports available. It will be potluck. It would be great if it is someone fairly close to either the Hwy 6 or Beltway 8 trailheads.

The parking area @ Dairy Ashford and the park seems to have plenty of parking on the weekends the few times we were there, but we have to do east and west portions. We will do the hike but can't do the party.
