Video of Stephen Hawking from the Brilliant Lecture Series

Professor Stephen Hawking's recent hospitalization, failing health and doctor's strict orders preclude his travel across the Atlantic Ocean to Houston. However, his exclusive lecture specifically for the Brilliant Lecture Series is being filmed in Cambridge, England and will be presented on March 26th 7pm at Jones Hall as scheduled. This once in a lifetime opportunity promises to reveal aspects of Professor Hawking's personal journey - his life, career and inspiration never shared before. Despite his fragile condition, Professor Hawking is grateful to his fans and the loyal patrons of the Brilliant Lecture Series for their understanding and says, "I cannot thank you enough for allowing me this opportunity to share my life's story and I hope to inspire all of you to find your brilliance."

For additional information, contact Brilliant Lecture Series at [masked] or [masked]. We look forward to seeing you at this historic event.

I haven't heard a thing, and doubt I ever will. I suspect the organizers did NOT destroy the original DVD and are probably handing copies to their buddies. It sucks.

Anyone have any updates from TBL or their credit card company?

This was my first (probably will be my last) interaction with this outfit. Once there, I spun my wheels almost an hour just to get in with my original (December) ticket (they never replied to my earlier e-mail queries). Then I wound up with altitude sickness way up somewhere - not what I expected for what I paid. As for the DVD, they were not selling it at their merchandise table, nor is it in their website. Their brass went with a film crew to England for this 6-hour video (edited to 70 minutes); I doubt they traveled economy class. By the way, their website shows they bring mostly entertainers and not enough people truly significant (IMHO) to Humanity. The Progressive Forum brings better speakers, and they have video archives. Yes, Hawking was wonderful, it's sad his video is lost to posterity -- not particularly "brilliant" on the part of this outfit. I bet Hawking would gladly donate proceeds of DVD sales to an appropriate foundation -- does he know it's being destroyed?

It was basically the best(and most expensive) YouTube video I've ever seen. Of course it would have been better if he was there. But even if he was there the speech would have had to be preprogrammed anyway.

I'm disputing this charge with my CC company. They agreed that it is unreasonable to assume a video is equivalent to the in-person lecture. Just curious, did anyone end up going? What was it like?

Ariel, they will not be releasing a DVD. In fact, the Founding Director told me that they would be "destroying" the video after it was played, so it was a one time only thing. I guess this was to keep with the exclusivity and authenticity of the intended original performance, but it seems rather wasteful to me. Then again, as we have already seen, nothing the "Brilliant" Lectures people do seems to have much forethought, so we really shouldn't be surprised.

Wow... what a complete waste. They spent all that time to create that DVD just to destroy it? Seems like it's just an excuse to say "We're not giving refunds because it's an exclusive showing of this lecture"

I really enjoyed the lecture. Professor Hawking is quite witty and inspiring!

Some of us are heading over to Stags Head for the meetup there.

So I got a refund email for the event on march 20th (Original date) Wondering if that means I got a refund for the event or they just cancelled the first date. Did everybody else get an email? I've been calling them today but they are close in preparation for tonight. So at this point i dont know if i have tickets and should show up or not...

Pisser. Silver lining for me: I'm working in Freeport that day, so now it's less critical to break my neck to get there "early".

Next question: I got my ticket on 19 Dec, for the original date and venue. Why have I not heard from "Brilliant Lectures"? May have to do with my changed e-mail address. Will seek to contact them. Considering how much I paid, I will "suggest" that they ought to provide me a DVD of the lecture...

    Hey guys,

Professor Hawking is no longer appearing live on Wednesday. Instead, a taping of the same lecture will be played. This means we will no longer be granted the opportunity to witness Professor Hawking in person.

I personally feel this is a completely different event and, while still meaningful, is not what we paid for or that was advertised. At present, to those unsatisfied with this new format, Brilliant Lectures is only issuing credit to another lecture instead of the full refund that seems warranted. This is a very disappointing turn of events on all fronts. While I am fully understanding in regards to Professor Hawking's, I strongly disagree with the way Brilliant Lectures has thus far handling the change.

I made a complaint with Brilliant Lectures and am expecting a call back, but in the mean time, I urge any of you who feel similarly to call or email them at[masked] or [masked] and voice your opinion.

I have asked for a refund and been put on a call back list. I have some sympathy for the Brilliant Lecture Series, this event has to have cost them the loss of the deposit at the Wortham Center and now the costs of Jones Hall. Still, good will very is important for building your customer base and and this event is sure to have brought in a number of new customers, even some that had not heard of the series before. Like you, Emily, I think this is a different event, not the one I paid for. A full refund offer is in order, although I might accept for a ticket for a future if it were offered as an alternate.

Thank's for standing up and making your voice heard Tom! I'm not going to go down without a fight on this one.

You guys that have tickets, enjoy the lecture, and please represent the Houston Skeptic Society and/or the Houston Super Secret Science Club well. I will be hanging at Stag's Head in case those of you unable to get a ticket want to get out of the house and visit for a while. See you all soon!

Hawking won a lifetime achievement award and its presentation is the same day as the previously scheduled event. They started calling ticket holders on Friday to assign new seats and issue new tickets.

It is a $3.0 million special award from the Fundamental Physics Prize foundation funded by the Russia based Milner Foundation. http://www.fundamenta.... It seems to be a worthwhile reason to reschedule.

      January 22, 2013

I just got called from the Brilliant Lecture people. He told me the current ticket is no longer valid, and sent me a replacement for Jones Hall date.

    January 21, 2013

  • John M.

I had 2 great tickets and have heard a thing except what is being posted on this site. If the new date is Jan 26th, I think I can make it but I cannot for a large number of other dates.

    January 21, 2013

    • Tom P.

Brilliant Lectures web site has the new date as Tuesday, March 26.

      January 21, 2013

I had set up a time earlier for dinner and will likely move that once I hear exactly what is happening.

The link provided takes you to an event on Tue Mar 26 at Jones Hall. Is there a separate event or did it change?

    January 21, 2013

    • Tom P.

They appear to have rescheduled the date of the lecture and changed venues. There is no press release on the web site or reason given in their blog.

      January 21, 2013

    • Tom P.

They have not updated the series Facebook page. I've asked them for a clarification. Has anyone with tickets heard from them?

      January 21, 2013

  • Tom Peacock changed the date and time from Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 7:00 PM to Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 7:00 PM

    Plus $ 8.50 "convenience fee"...
Got mine - $ 55.00 zone, on the right side.

I think the $35 seats are already sold out.

    December 19, 2012

Are we going for the $55 seats? Should we try to group together? The $35 seats are way too far back IMO.
