Organizational Updates and Announcements

To the Houston Skeptic Society:

Our group has continued to grow steadily since its inception three years ago. We have gone from six people having beers and crawfish at the Ragin' Cajun to over 500 members, many of whom are involved in organizing conferences and activism projects in and around the community. And with that growth, it is clear that our organizational efforts need to keep pace in order to continue the growth and to ensure quality experiences for our members attending events.

So it is in that spirit that we have decided to re-structure our Leadership Team.

If you look at the Meetup site, you will notice the Leadership Team now consists of only three people. Those members that were removed as leaders are not being dismissed, but rather, we are simply starting fresh, and the team so far includes only those who have confirmed their interest and commitment to a leadership role and the new structure.

We will be adding qualified people to the force in the days and weeks to come, but in the meantime, let me introduce each member of the Leadership Team, as it stands right now, and give you a summary of the role each will play within the group:

  • Sam Ogden (Lead Organizer) --- Primary contact for outside parties, including the media, other skeptic/critical thinking organizations, and community leaders. Organizer of local and and national activism projects. Organizer of and primary contact for monthly Skeptics in the Pub gatherings. Contributer to @HoustonSkeptics Twitter feed. Organizer and primary contact for miscellaneous events as they arise.
  • Emily Schwartz (Co-Organizer) --- Organizer and primary contact for family-friendly events, including Skeptics Brunch (to be announce soon). Organizer and primary contact for Houston Skeptics Society book club and discussion group (to be announced soon). Facebook master for the Houston Skeptic Society Facebook page (to be resurrected soon). Contributer to @HoustonSkeptics Twitter feed. Organizer and primary contact for miscellaneous events as they arise.
  • Naomi Baker (Co-Organizer) --- Backup contact for all events listed above. Contributer to @HoustonSkeptics Twitter feed. Organizer and primary contact for miscellaneous events as they arise. Note: Naomi's participation and duties are subject to increase as her job permits.

As mentioned above, we would like to make the Leadership Team more robust. Ideally, we would like to recruit four Assistant Organizers, both to add creative diversity and to have trusted people available for events and miscellaneous tasks. But we want to impress on you all that Assistant Organizer will not just be a title. We are not asking for a great deal of anyone's time. Hopefully, we won't have to tax anyone too much. After all, we're volunteers and we all have lives outside of the group. But we are hoping for some level of commitment.

So if you can commit a few hours a month to the group, and you are interested in being a part of the Leadership Team, please send me a private message through this site, and let me know what your interests are and how much time you think you can devote.

There are some exciting things upcoming for the Houston Skeptic Society in 2012! We ask that you bear with us as we work out the organizational kinks, and lend a hand if you possibly can.

Thank you for your time.

Sam Ogden
