Minnewaska State Park

We will be going to Minnewaska State Park and seeing both Lake Awosting and Lake Minnewaska. The hike from the parking to Lake Awosting is approximately 9 miles round trip. The park should be beautiful as always, but the leaves will have started changing and be even more impressive.

There is an NYS State Park $8 fee per car for entry (cars with a current Empire Passport sticker enter free).

If you sign up and end up being unable to make it, please change your RSVP as much in advance as you can.

Note: We are going to meet at the main Minnewaska parking (5281 Route 44-55, Kerhonkson, NY - just past New Paltz), not the Lake Awosting Parking so as to have a longer trip.

Note: Meeting Location

We'll be meeting in the upper parking lot at Minnewaska State Park.  Look for my (Paul's) car, a bright blue Prius C (looks like this).

What to bring

This isn't a marathon, but its not a short hike either.  Bring a decent amount of water (I'd recommend at least a liter), some bug spray, sunblock, and lunch.  We'll stop for lunch when we arrive at the lake.

Sorry I missed everyone. I never managed to catch up to you, and couldn't find what route you were going to take. I ended up taking Upper Awosting and then went around lake Awosting and took Castle Point back before finishing circling Lake Minniwaska. So it sounds like I never had a chance to catch up to you.

Sorry for missing you John. I didn't check my phone for email once I left my house in the morning so I didn't see your message. Hope you got some good scenery either way!

Paul thanks for planning the day. Diane and I just kept walking and didn't realize we missed the Blueberry Run, and so we ended up taking a wooded foot trail and on the way back we saw the wedding going on under the tents.

Great day for the hike, was as good weather as could be imagined. Beautiful scenery & great company. We stopped by Lake Minnewaska for the view briefly, then took the Lower Awosting trail from Minnewaska to Lake Awosting. On the way back, we took the Upper Awosting Carriageway for a bit, then took Blueberry Run for a time before getting back to the Lower Awosting trail.

Thanks to all for being so nice and helpful and putting up with a pokey hiker! Today was beautiful and loved the blueberry path bridge.

I think I am dropping out . I thought over and 9 miles seems a lot too me. I have walked around cities on my trips and I can walk, but I am not sure I will be able to do this on my first hike. And I don't want other people to slow down because of me. Have a nice day and hike. I will just fo to Ashokan reservoir or something today.

Smart move. You might see me at the Reservoir today. I generally walk 3+ miles there every day.

      September 28, 2013

    • Dace

      I walked 5 miles at Ashokan reservoir.I didn't see you there. I could walk 1 or 1 & half miles more , but I am glad that I didn't go for 9.

If anyone wants to meet at the parking lot across the street from the Mountain Brauhas at the base of the mountain. (Rte. 299 and Rte 44/55). I have empire passport and can fit 6 in my car. Let me know if anyone is interested in meeting there.

My thoughts were the same I think 9 miles
Is to much for me too, I think I will pass.

I have done this hike many times and always have people commuting from the parking lot across the street from the Mountain Brauhas at the base of the mountain. (Rte. 299 and Rte 44/55). Then we can all chip in for parking. Let me know if anyone is interested in meeting there.

      OK I will be there.

Looking forward to a nice hike and some fall foliage.

My life keeps interfering with my fun. I hope to get to the next hike.

As to how long, I can't say exactly since it depends on the pace. Based on the pace we had for Vernooy Kill, I would imagine at least 4 hours, maximum of 5 hours round trip.

I have had people asking for a longer trip so I picked this one for the scenery, length, and fall foliage.

I'll be scheduling a shorter walk (walkway over the hudson & the hudson valley rail trail) for either September 22nd or October 6th) for those interested.

I'd plan on just assuming five hours and spending the balance putzing around and snacking at Awosting Lake. Great place.

      September 9, 2013

    • Dace

I am interested also in that walk. Please notify me when that will be.

For those who may think this is a little long, I would say two things: First, you may be surprised as to how far you will go with good weather, scenery, and company. Second, those who don't want to go too far may want to only go roughly half way. I won't cajole/push/coerce those who want to turn back.

As for me, I haven't done this hike this summer and I'm looking forward to it and seeing those who join us on it!

Even if you don't feel up to it you should still come as Lake Minniwaska right at the parking lot is worth a drive just by itself. These carriageway are gravel roads and not footpaths and if you take the right route any elevation climbs are very gradual. I'm a quite large person and handle it just fine. Just take your time and bring plenty of water and food.

Guess I'll repost this here since this is where people are talking.

There are three parking lots for Minniwaska, none of which are that close to the address linked on the 9/29/13 meetup.
There's the Minniwaska Lake parking lot: http://tinyurl.com/pk... which is the most popular entrance, but the furthest from the location given in the meetup notice.
The Lower Awosting parking lot: http://tinyurl.com/pu...
And there's supposed to be parking on Jenny Lane: http://tinyurl.com/o7... which is closest to the location given in the meetup notice, but seems to be the least frequently used of the three.

The last time I attended a meetup group at Minniwaska it wasn't specified where to meet, and we were all split up between the three, so I figured I'd raise the issue.

Okay, the Lake Minniwaska entrance then. When viewing that address on google maps it shows a place a few miles down the road from there. Bing maps seems to land on the right spot though.

You don't want to take the Lower Awosting trail if you can avoid it. It's physically harsher and the least scenic route in my opinion. Park at the upper lot.

I've done this trip a half dozen times at a VERY leisurely pace. If you start from the upper parking lot and take the Castle Point trail to Awosting Lake as the first leg. It's a gradual elevation climb with great scenery payoffs along the way. After the lake take the Upper Awosting trail back to parking. That trail is practically flat. I'd avoid parking in the lower lot as the Lower Awosting carriageway is nicknamed by some as Cardiac Hill and the scenery is far less rewarding.

Upper parking can fill on nice weekends with people visiting from outside the area but if you get there a bit before 9:30am I'd imagine you would be fine.

how would you rate this hike as far as intensity and approximately how long will the hike be?

    September 9, 2013

    • Paul C.

This is definitely listed as moderate everywhere I've seen it. I'm asthmatic (not severely, but somewhat) and its not too bad. Considerably easier than some of the other hikes I've been on, but not flat and perfect like a rail trail either.

As I understand it, all the trails between Lake Minniwaska and Lake Awosting are carriage trails, for what that's worth.
