One of our members, Lea, has suggested Maneelap Srimongkoun for our next dinner event!
This new restaurant in the Excelsior district is reportedly one of only two restaurants in San Francisco that serves Laotian food, and both of them only recently opened in the last 6 months or so. Maneelap Srimongkoun in particular was opened by a pair of Lao and Thai sister-in-laws who named their restaurant after the monk who blessed it, and who have very helpfully created separate menus for each cuisine.
For the uninitiated like myself, Laotian food is apparently quite distinct from Thai food, and is characterized by sticky rice, meats somewhat drier than we're used to, and the love of raw herbs, most notably mint and dill. Food is traditionally eaten at room temperature, family style, and with sticky rice used as a vehicle for bringing food to mouths.
