Dr. Darrel Ray's Bio:

Dr. Ray holds a BA in sociology/anthropology from Friends University, an MA from Scarritt College for Christian Workers and Ed.D in counseling psychology from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Raised in a fundamentalist home by parents who eventually became missionaries to Mexico, he has seen religion from the inside out. Both his grandfathers were preachers and elders.

But no matter how much he tried, nothing about religion seemed to add up, so by age 40 he was an atheist. His research and writing led him to Professor Richard Dawkins and memetics. This paradigm provided a framework from which he researched and wrote about religion as a parasitic meme, culminating in his bestselling book, The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture. His latest book, Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality will be the subject of his talk on November 16th.

In 2009, Dr. Ray founded Recovering from Religion (RR), an international organization and 501c3 non-profit, dedicated to helping people leave religion, and is project director for the Secular Therapy Project, helping people find secular, evidence-based therapists. Dr. Ray has been on dozens of TV and radio programs including ABC News Nightline and his work and research have been written about in such publications as Playboy Magazine, The Daily Mail and The Los Angeles Times, Times of India, Irish Times, among others. Recently, Richard Dawkins featured him and his research in his documentary Sex, Death and and the Meaning of Life, released last month (October 2012).
