What we’re about
WELCOME!
HSGP is a warm and welcoming community of people with open minds and lots of questions. While we have a lot of diverse opinions and interests, we are accepting and tolerant of differing ideas and positions. While non-belief in the supernatural brought many of us together, our belief in the essential goodness of humanity and dedication to open discussion keeps us together and helps us grow. We have only one life and we strive to make it a good one for ourselves and for others. We are home to people with a wide range of beliefs and positions such as: humanists, atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and Nones. That covers a lot of ground!
In addition to our Facebook group, we offer a variety of activities to support our Humanist goals and we are always looking for more ways to socialize, learn, and help others. We have a community center near downtown Mesa! Be sure to check us out at our Game nights, Sunday Speaker meetings, or other events.
To learn more, go to our website at www.HSGP.org. There you will find more information about HSGP and our scheduled events. If you are not a member, please consider becoming a paid member. Your support keeps the building open and the activities running. If you’re not ready to commit to a membership, please join us at one of our free and open to the public events where we hope you will find like-minded individuals. Thank you and we look forward to meeting you!
About Humanism (from the American Humanist Association)
Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

Sunday Speaker Topic:
Poorly Executed, Death Row Executions in ArizonaDescription:
What does execution look like? What does it feel like? What gets someone there? What did Michael witness as an observer? What could ever go wrong? And… What about the victims?Bio:
Michael Kiefer was a reporter at The Arizona Republic/USA Today from 2003 to 2019, covering courts and legal issues, especially as they pertain to immigration and the death penalty. He was part of a team that won the 2015 Hillman Prize for reporting on unaccompanied minors held in immigration camps near the Mexican border. Kiefer followed the court battles over Arizona state immigration law since their inception, and wrote an expose of prosecutorial misconduct in Arizona as part of a John Jay College/Guggenheim fellowship. He led coverage on the trial of celebrity killer Jodi Arias and was one of a handful of journalists to interview her. He reported on the legal proceedings for Jared Loughner, who was sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 mass shooting in Tucson that left six people dead and seriously injured former U.S Rep. Gabrielle Giffords; some of that reporting fit into a series that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Kiefer broke the story that Arizona and other states were illegally buying drugs from Europe to carry out executions and witnessed the 2014 two-hour-long botched execution in Arizona. His reporting on erroneously imposed life sentences rewrote Arizona law. Michael has reported extensively from Europe and North and South America. A former staff writer at Phoenix New Times and a former associate editor of Outside magazine, his features, essays and profiles have appeared in a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, including Playboy, Esquire, Vanity Fair, Self, Sports Illustrated and The New York Times. Kiefer has taught Spanish, writing and journalism at Arizona State University, Grand Canyon University, The University of Michigan, Columbia College and Roosevelt University in Chicago. He speaks Spanish, Italian and French and is the author of eight books. Please Note:

- Leaving Religion Discussion Group - on Google MeetLink visible for attendees
This group meets on google meet.
Video call link: https://meet.google.com/vxw-vwco-sdwThe process of deconverting and leaving your religious beliefs behind is challenging, and it can impact many areas of your life. Know that you are not alone. This meet-up is designed to provide a welcoming place for each person to share feelings, thoughts, and stories, or to simply listen to others.
This is not meant to be a counseling or therapy group. We are meeting and talking to others who have gone through similar experiences, which can be comforting. You’ll meet former believers who are now atheists or agnostics, or in the process of deconstructing their beliefs. This group is intended to support those who have let go of their religious and supernatural beliefs rather than individuals seeking new religious or spiritual beliefs or identities.
The topic for April’s meeting is: What are the best ways that you have found since leaving religion to make new friends, build connections, and find community?
Limit 12 people
Let’s enjoy some great conversation and get to know some awesome people. Join us.
