Paleo Hike & Picnic

  • This location is shown only to members

Join us as we hike the Fruita Paleo Area Trail and then enjoy a picnic at Snooks Bottom. The Fruita Paleo Area Trail is a brief and easy half mile hike. It features 20 interpretive signs describing the landscape as it existed 150 million years ago and the dinosaurs and other Jurassic vertebrates that roamed the region. This world-class fossil site contains a prolific record of Jurassic microvertebrates exposed in deeply dissected Morrison badlands. Please bring any water, snacks, sunscreen or anything else you might need for the hike.

After the hike, we'll take a short car ride down to Snooks Bottom. We'll have a leisurely picnic down near the lake and people are free to stay as long as they'd like. Please bring your own lunch. Snooks bottom has a 1.2 mile trail that circles the lake that you can optionally choose to hike. Children and dogs are welcome at both the hike and the picnic. There are several other hiking trails in the area and places like the Dinosaur Journey Museum for anyone who would like to spend their day in Fruita.

When: Sunday, June 29th at 10:00 am

Where: Meet in the parking lot of Dinosaur Journey (550 Jurassic Ct.) just south of the Fruita Interstate Off Ramp / roundabouts. From there we will head out to the Fruita Paleo Trail in a convoy.

    Sounds like easy fun.
We have a bicyclist from Korea coming to stay with us for a night or two and so we're not available.

Is Snooks Bottom a good place to swim?

Dana, I was down there today and people were swimming and a couple of people were on tubes. I called the Fruita Parks and Rec and asked if it was permitted and they said that it is. However, there is not a buoyed section for swimming or anything. I typically see more dogs in the water than people, as an fyi.
