Come join us if it sounds fun! We plan to meet online monthly on the first Wednesday night at 7 pm. If you think you might be interested, come hope on the server Wednesday. We will discuss the format we are planning on proceeding with for the first few months! This will take place on our "House of Humanists" Discord Server. For those unfamiliar with Discord, here’s a brief overview. What is Discord? Discord is a powerful program that allows users to create a server that allows text and voice communication. You can think of a server much like a house – a server has rooms (called channels) dedicated to different topics. In each room, you can post media (text chat, links, articles, etc.) or you can connect over voice. In a voice channel, you can hear and speak with anyone else who’s currently in that room. How do I get Discord? Either download Discord from their website, https://discordapp.com/, or download the Discord app on your favorite mobile device. Note that you will need to create a username, a password, and associate an email address with your account. To participate in House of Humanists, you will also need to confirm your email address. Okay, I have Discord, so how do I talk with humanists? In Discord, look for the “Add a server” option. Choose “Join a Server” (not “Make a Server”). Discord will ask for a server code, which is the last part of the hyperlink above – K6kDzeu. Alternatively you can click on https://discordapp.com/invite/K6kDzeu – Discord will connect you automatically. Help! I joined the server, but I can’t post any texts and/or talk with anyone! You will not be able to post anything at all in Discord unless you have verified your email address. When you first create a Discord account, they will send you an email to verify your address. This is a security measure to ensure that we don’t have random people joining to troll us (or random bots off the internet). When you first join Discord, you will enter on the Public side of our server. Here you can see announcements and text in the few public channels we have available. If you want to really participate in HOI, please let us know by informing an Administrator or an Ambassador. We will promote you to a Member (no cost required!) and then you will see all the rooms available on our server. This is, again, a security measure to keep out bots and other people who would spoil our fun. How do I call out specific people? You said to contact an Ambassador for help! In any chat, you can call out specific people by texting their name or position preceded by the symbol @. For example, if you type “@ambassador I need help!” all us Ambassadors will get a special flag to check out your request for help. While leadership will make a point of checking the server daily, this is the fastest way to notify someone. Each user has their name colored so you can easily identify their role. Ambassadors’ names are orange, while Administrators’ names are in red. Your fellow members’ names are in blue. Speak to an ambassador to get your name upgraded to blue!
