New Meetup: Basic Photo Series I - Mastering Exposure

From: Rick R.
Sent on: Wednesday, August 4, 2010 5:54 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for Huntington Beach Photography Meetup Group!

What: Basic Photo series - Mastering Exposure

When: Thursday, August 12,[masked]:30 PM

Price: $25.00 per person

Where: Balboa Fun Zone
600 E Bay Avenue
Balboa, CA 92661

This will be the first of a series on the craft of photography. In order to take your creative photography where you want it to go you MUST master the technical aspects of the medium.

I can't tell you how fulfilling it is to be in technical control so you can CREATE beautiful pictures rather than just try and TAKE beautiful pictures with your fingers crossed.

This is your first big step down that pathway to creativity!

Technical issues covered in this series (not just this first session):

1. Exposure - Learning how the three elements of exposure come together creatively.
2. Composition - Great pictures are created from a great vision, there is no serendipity involved.
3. Lenses - Using different lenses creatively. It's not just all about focal length!
4. Controlling contrast and lighting for mood - The emotional elements of a great image.
5. Mastering pre-visualization - To create what you dream

In this first session we will focus (pardon the pun) on exposure. I will discuss the three elements of exposure, often referred to as the "Exposure Triangle" and how you can create beautiful images by understanding how these three elements work together and mastering this technique. You will learn about why using your camera always on "P" is not going to get you the best images. I will demonstrate the differences you can create by bravely roaming over into the realm of MANUAL exposure or using your camera's Aperture/Shutter priority options.

Included in this workshop is a three video tutorial set that I created called "Learning to Love the Histogram." These popular videos explain in detail how your camera's light meter "thinks" and how by understanding that you can master your exposure in any lighting situation by reading the histogram. The three video series is 90 minutes long and sells on my site on DVD for $40. Those that attend this workshop will receive the three video set FREE at the workshop. Think of it as your homework.

We will meet at the Balboa Fun Zone (by the ferris wheel) and walk around taking pictures. I will be constantly talking and demonstrating these techniques. You will then use the techniques with my over view to create some pictures. Where we end up depends on the light and subject preferences of the group.

We will finish up at a local restaurant for an inexpensive dinner together. NOTE: Your registration fee does not include the meal so don't order lobster unless you can afford it. :)

The Meetup will end when it ends. Who knows, we will continue into the evening to take our new knowledge into the world of night photography around the harbor. Bring a tripod (leave it in your car's trunk) so you don't have to schlep it around unless you need it.

My guess is that we will finish up around 9:30ish.

Come along and start to get a creative control over your photography!

SURPRISE!! For those attending this workshop I am following it up with another session aboard a Duffy cruising around Newport Harbor. We'll have 6 photographers per session so you are assured to get all your questions answered. (Sorry, you cannot bring a guest that did not attend this workshop.)

Come along, bring some wine and cheese, and we will discuss photography and I will answer all of your questions generated from our first creative workshop. What better way to unclog the creative process than to leisurely cruse the harbor together. This is only open to those that sign up for this workshop. Watch the Meetup schedule for this session. There will be no charge for this follow up session. I am even paying for the Duffy!
