Meet & Greet Monthly Meeting

Since we've had so many new members join our group over the past few months we thought it would be great to give everyone an opportunity to meet each other!

Join us for an informal night of small-group discussion in the basement of Back to the Grind. Food will be provided and drinks are available through the coffeeshop.

Suggested donation is $5 to help us cover the cost of location rental and food.

Please feel free to come late if you need to as we'll be there for a few hours.

Parking is available behind the coffeeshop as well as in the parking garage on Orange St. The parking garage is across the street from the Back to the Grind parking lot and is free after 6pm.

We hope to see everyone there!

Looking forward to meeting freethinkers. I'm an Atheist and look forward to sharing thoughts with like-minded people.

Julie, I am sorry about the drama you are seeing. It really is usually nothing like this. I hope you can reconsider giving it a try. The members really are very kind. Everyone is a little emotionally charged right now, but everyone really just wants this to be a fun and welcoming environment.

I appreciate that. Thanks for the reassuring words. I've just had ridiculous drama around me for the past several years.... Just watched the craziness transpire. I have a calm, drama-free life, now and don't need more. I'd presume Atheists would be better grounded, but I guess politics, drama, power-plays, all can sour situations, sometimes. I would love to meet intelligent, logical people, especially the member who says, "Ask me about science"-- I would LOVE to learn more science. So, perhaps I'll keep my eyes open and wait for the dust to settle and neck hairs to lie down, claws to retract. Once the coast is clear, I'll see about dropping in. Thanks, again. PEACE to all.

The format was great. I like the idea of breaking up into smaller discussion groups, where you can meet new people and everyone gets a chance to share ideas. It would be nice to find a place that isn't so noisy (a fact of older buildings), a problem we have at UU as well. It was great to see so many new faces. One suggestion might be to 'scramble' the groups after 20 minutes maximizing the people we meet and interact with, and maybe providing a list of 4 or 5 suggested topics for the small groups to choose from. Conversations never remain on topic, but it's nice to have a choice of starting points.

The scrambling is actually a REALLY good idea. If we have this format again, I'll bring a cooking timer or something.

The noise was a bit much. They could use some acoustic tiles on the ceiling. The heat was probably less than the UU would have been though (stone buildings and all). I suppose we'll keep looking for the perfect venue. If anyone has any recommendations, please let us know!

The venue was an experiment we conducted in an effort to move our meetings out of the Unitarian Universalist Church. I appreciate the feedback an will keep looking for other possible venues that would work better.

This was my first atheist meeting of any sort. I was struck by how comforting it was to discuss politics or science or anything else without having to worry about how god or religion might enter the conversation. Met some very neat folks, and expecting to meet lots more. I'm happy this doesn't seem to be a "strident and angry" advocacy group - like some online groups are accused of being.

I'll changing my mind on showing up to this one, until you guys get yourselves sorted out

    3 · July 11, 2013

    • Carolyn

Hershel, I hope that you might reconsider. Even though you have been seeing all of the drama, *everyone* that I know personally, members from both sides of this issue, is kind and really cares about making things great. You've caught us at a bad time, but I hope you won't give up on us.

The Friends from IEAA Facebook page was created by someone who is no longer a member of the group but merely wanted a convenient means to stay in touch with friends he made from the group.

I enjoyed meeting everyone and hope that other new members give this group a chance, despite the awkward timing of the politics. Looking forward to trying another meetup!

I guess southpark was right all along.... Even if we all became atheist people will find ways to get divided and gripe about something lol

Soooo true. It's hard. I hope that the issues will be resolved soon. I used to be mormon and we couldn't even *have* issues like this because everyone was "called by god "to be leaders, so to question leadership was to question god. At least now I know that I *can* voice my opinion without worrying about offending god and going to hell. =0]

It was a fine meeting. The negative comments on this page are by someone who did not attend.

Was my first time. Was nice though I felt a little self conscious very noisy due to the big fans but everyone seemed very nice and welcoming. Hope to see everyone again. Hopefully it will be cooler.

Did they fix the a/c or is it going to be 90 degrees with 105% humidity in this basement.

Yes definitely humid and hot. Would've stayed longer if it wasn't so damned hot!
