The Backyard Skeptics in Orange County had scheduled a meetup in their group to have a campout in Joshua Tree to watch the Perseid meteor shower. By some miracle (praise be to the FSM!), there was an available site within the same campground, right across the way, so we have the wonderful opportunity to both see the meteor shower, and to meet our skeptical neighbors to the west!
August 10th is within a few days of the peak of the meteor shower, so we should have the opportunity to see an abundance of meteors as they flash across the sky! The Backyard Skeptics group has been very gracious, and welcomes the idea of our groups mingling together. Our two sites are separate from each other, but will be just a short walk away.
The campground is called Sheep Pass Group. It is located within Joshua Tree National Park. Our reserved site within the camp is G-05. The cost for the site was $40. Therefore, it will be about $2 per person to go. (If more than $40 is received, it will go to the group.) There is a limit on attendees, so please RSVP as soon as possible. There is also a limit on vehicles, so carpooling is encouraged, with riders contributing toward the cost of gas (as it's 100 miles from Riverside). (I have recently come into possession of an 8-seater vehicle, so when I know how many seats I will have available, I will post it in the comments section.)
Please note that while I will be there at 2:00 PM, there is no expectation for any other attendees to arrive at that time. Come when you can!
Please bring dinner for yourself. There will be barbeques and a fire pit available if you would like to cook something. I will bring marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate so that we can make smores for dessert. If you would like to bring anything else for dessert and/or snacks, either for yourselves, or to share, please do.
The Backyard Skeptics will be going to a restaurant in town for breakfast. They have let us know that we can join them if we would like to - and if the restaurant is okay with the total amount of people. Please let me know if do you plan to join them as soon as possible so that I may let them know how many to expect.
Please be aware that it will be very hot there. The average high for August 10th in Joshua Tree is 107°, and the average low is 78°. Please plan and pack accordingly. I encourage bringing sunscreen, and I will also bring extra sunscreen. Bringing a hat would be a good idea. I will be bringing cups, and a lot of water, but I also encourage everyone to also bring their own water, so that we can ensure that everyone stays hydrated. Please make sure that whatever food you bring will not go bad in the heat, or bring an ice chest if you do plan to bring perishable items.
I will be on the lookout to buy and/or borrow canopies so that we can ensure that there is shade available. If you have one, or would like to contribute to the cost of one, please let me know.
There is no electricity or plumbing at the camp. The restroom facilities are vault toilets.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I hope we can get a good group there as I think it could really be a lot of fun!
