What we're about

Our meetings serve three general functions:

• To facilitate intellectual explorations of IONS research, ecology, global issues and perspectives, the spiritual or the paranormal.

• To offer experiential opportunities, particularly with activities that support our personal transformation and expansion of consciousness, as well as activities that help further the shift to a more unifed, healthy, sustainable world.

• To support one another's individual experiences of non-ordinary states of consiousness that are not necessarily supported by the dominant society/culture. This supportive function also serves to help us integrate IONS knowledge and wisdom into our individual work and personal spheres of influence.

Our meetings are every fourth Sunday of the month. We invite all Portland IONS members to make suggestions, join the Steering Committee, or volunteer to lead a meditation or a discussion on a particular topic.

'I Don't End Here' Exploring the Limits of Non-Local Consciousness

An afternoon of conversation to consider that we extend beyond our skin and overlap with each other. Engage with a conventional biomedical researcher, brought up on the dogma of ‘life as chemistry’, who became an acupuncture researcher and now envisions ‘life as biofields’. Let’s discuss how much of today’s medicine is still based on the 19th century Industrial Revolution’s outmoded fascination with things mechanical. Let’s consider, am ‘I’ inside my body or is my body inside of ‘me’? Richard Hammerschlag moved to Portland in 1999 to create a research department at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. His prior life included a 25-year career in neuroscience research. In his current ‘retirement’, he serves as co-Director of Research for the Consciousness and Healing Initiative or CHI (www.chi.is) based in La Jolla, CA. Ever the Gemini, Richard continues his fascination with ‘energy medicine’ as a synthesis of the best of Western and Eastern approaches to health and healing. A $5.00 donation is appreciated. Light refreshments available. Join us in Muir Hall at Taborspace. www.ionspdx.org
