We start next to the mountain station of the Dallenwil-Wirzweli cable car (1'227 m a.s.l.) and walk for about 15 minutes (1 km), past the mountain chapel to the starting sign for the Arvi trail. It’s on the left, next to the lower station of the Gummenalp cable car. From here, the marked trail runs parallel with the Tannenpfad trail as far as Hinterhegen. Here the first ascent begins in the direction of Dürrenboden towards the pond where we take a short break. This is followed by about 2km ascent past the Meierhutte farm. We continue along the hiking trail through the Arvi woods (Please note: this is a designated undisturbed wildlife area – please do not leave the trail, and keep your dog on a leash).

Through alpine meadows we come to the highest point of the Chienerenegg, at 1'533 m a.s.l. where we enjoy the wonderful view of the well-known surrounding Central Swiss Alps (Titlis, the Walenstock peaks, Hoh Brisen, Buochserhorn, Rigi, Pilatus, Stanserhorn). We then continue along the precipitous crest which leads to Ächerlistrasse road (1'440 m a.s.l.) and cross it. The trail will lead us towards the valley. Once past the Gross Ächerli farm, we will see the Holzwang mountain chapel (1'443 m a.s.l.) which is our next stop. First we hike up to the hill cross, where a breathtaking view of the valley awaits us. On a clear day, we can see the lake in Canton Obwalden, and the Brienzer Rothorn.

The way back to our starting point takes us left, past the hill cross, and we will see the village of Wirzweli, the Engelberger Aa valley and diagonally across it, Maria Rickenbach. The trail leads us down to the cantonal road, past Chli Ächerli farm and to the alpine farm Langbodenstubli, right by the Eggalp cable car. Then we head back towards Dallenwil-Wirzeli cable car station where we start the hike.
