New Year's Day Polar Bear Paddle

  • Eagle Creek - IYAK Paddle Craft Launch Site

7602 Walnut Point Road , Indianapolis, IN (map)

    39.864265 -86.303162

  • We will meet at the new paddle craft launch next to the park marina.
  • Let's start the new year off right, on the water. We will meet at the new boat launch ramp that several of our fellow IYAK worked so hard to build. It is located behind the restrooms by the marina.  (MAP LINK) This is in the park itself and NOT the marina on Dandy Trail. The park is open, but since there will be nobody at the entrances we get free admission. We'll meet at 2:00pm and try to launch as soon as possible. Since it will be cold, we'll paddle around for no more than two hours. We'll head back whenever the group gets cold. Afterwards, we will find a nice restaurant to get some hot drinks and a hot meal. For the faint of heart, those who don't want to paddle can meet us for dinner.

Please dress properly for this. A dry suit is recommended and a wetsuit is next best. At least wear rain gear to keep the drips and splashes off your body. Multiple layers is best. Make sure you wear polypropylene, polyester, or a similar material that wick away moisture and doesn't retain it. Remember, the two wise sayings concerning what to wear in cold conditions: Cotton Kills and Cotton is Rotten. Bring a change of clothing just in case.

Difficulty Rating: Moderate due to possible cold conditions.

Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks,  towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, safety whistle, drybags, Ziplock bags, camera, binoculars, rope, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor.
For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially in cold weather. Polypropylene and polyester are good choices as they don't hold water and wicks moisture away from you.

If you need to rent a kayak call Freedom Kayak Adventures at[masked]-1484. Rental fee for this trip will be $25 per boat.

If you have any questions call Paul at[masked]-7107.

***The organizers reserve the right to cancel this event due to dangerous weather conditions. To find out about any possible changes or cancellation please check your e-mails prior to leaving for this event.***

Please answer ALL of the questions when you RSVP.
