What we're about
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PEOPLE WISHING TO JOIN THE GROUP (I'll put his first, because, from my experience, people tend to not read the description to the end): The organizers of this group reserve the right to refuse to approve anyone joining this group. However, we'll try our best not to be arbitrary in our decision not to approve prospective members. IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED AS A MEMBER OF THIS GROUP, YOU MUST HAVE A RECOGNIZABLE PHOTO OF YOURSELF POSTED TO YOUR PROFILE. Also, if you wish to join us, you profile must not be an empty profile - and by "empty", I mean we can learn nothing about you by looking at it: no introduction, other meetups you are a member of and interests are hidden, and the only reason for joining you give is "sounds interesting" or "I'm curious".
Now, with the conditions of joining out of the way, the description of what this group is all about:
"Great people talk about IDEAS. Average people talk about THINGS. Small people talk about OTHER PEOPLE." --Tobias S. Gibson
Are you tired of repetitive, maddeningly superficial "small talk"? Does endless talk about sports figures and celebrities bore you out of your wits? Would you prefer instead to discuss the ideas that shaped history?
If you answered "yes", you are cordially invited a Pasadena discussion group. This meet-up will be an intellectual oasis, a refuge for those who wish to escape the ubiquitous small talk and gossip about celebrities. Here we’ll discuss not people or things, but the ideas – powerful ideas that shaped our thinking, our life and the world we live in. There have been deep thinkers throughout history – how do their ideas still affect us? Were there any good ideas in the past that have been undeservedly forgotten? Were there any bad ideas that changed the world for the worst, and, if yes, how can we resist their influence?
We will discuss a variety of topics here. At the end of every meeting, we'll brainstorm about the topic of our next meeting. You are invited to join us and add your two cents to the wealth of discussion.
