  • The Enlightenment and The Founding of America
This month our topic will be the Enlightenment and the Founding of America, Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke, Adam Smith, Renee Descartes, Samuel Johnson, as well as many lesser known thinkers provided the intellectual foundations on which the founders of The United States based their design for the young American government. New areas of science in physics, chemistry, and biology were also ripe with new ideas of how to look at the world, our lives in it, and ways that we could change the world in ways far beyond anything that had been seen before, lead by men like Issac Newton, James Watt, Antoine Lavosier, Humphrey Davy, John Dalton, and many others. New projects and institutions were springing up everywhere. Coffee houses, debating societies, the Royal Society, dictionaries, and the first modern encyclopedias, and scientific expeditions circled the world discovering new vistas and a new idea of our place in the world. The arts were blooming as well through the introduction of new art forms like the novel and opera, new forms of music like the sonata, the piano, and musical performances in concert halls. In religion, a rather less dogmatic and more open to question and rational analysis developed, as did the idea of deism and even atheism among many prominent thinkers. Join us for a discussion of these and other ideas that developed in that era and how those led the the ideas that predominated in the founding of the United States.
