We will meet to discuss important ideas presented in specific books, essays, and other writings. The writings that will be chosen will be those which have some of the following attributes: (a) have persisted through time, (b) present ideas that are worth paying attention to, and (c) improve one's understanding of the world.
We will explore books, and passages within books and discuss the ideas presented in them as a group in order to gain a better understanding of the ideas. Initially, I'd like to discuss sections of Orwell's 1984 in relation to social structure, war, and incentives relating to the preservation of power. Other books/writings to discuss in the future include Nietzsche's books, Chomsky's political books, Russell's essays, Freud's writings, and, as a group, get through the entire Piketty's Capital in the 21st Century.
My goal is to bring together people interested in discussing these sorts of texts for the purpose of understanding the ideas presented in them at a deeper level through collective exploration.
