What we're about

This Meetup group is for fans of indies, documentaries, and international films. Although we generally meet at one of the local independent movie theaters in the Sarasota area, we are temporarily maintaining this group as an online group through the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our online presence has been very successful, so there is a strong likelihood that we will continue with the online format even when we begin to visit the local theaters again. This means that you can participate no matter where you are located!!!

Each month, we will select three films, determined through our monthly Zoom discussions, which we will schedule to hold the last Sunday evening of each month. From our selection, we will create an “Event” for each movie. Members can view the selected movie(s) anytime during the following month and share comments and feedback in the Comments section for the designated movie.

Members are welcome to participate in our monthly Zoom meetings, however, space is limited. During our monthly online meetings, we will discuss each film as a group, and make our suggestions and selections for the following month.

We look forward to your participation!

The Trial of the Chicago Seven (2020)

Your Home

This is the first of four (4) movies selected for our members to watch and discuss in the comments section below, for the month of November. There is no “location” for this movie, other than the privacy of your own home. This film is an historical legal drama based on the real life events of a group of anti-Vietnam War protesters who were charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intent of inciting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The film stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, Jeremy Strong. The Chicago seven were actually eight, but one case was declared a mistrial. We witness the prejudice shown by the judge, the sympathy shown by the jurors, multiple contempt of court charges, the police blockades, crowds rioting in the streets, anger toward police and anger toward the government that were all occurring during these tumultuous times. Based on real life events. Although the film was released in September 2020, it has already received highly acclaimed critics reviews. 2 hours, 10 mins. Available on Netflix You may also rent inexpensively through other streaming devices. If you do not have the streaming device for the specific movie, you may do an internet search for the movie title to find alternative ways to find and view the movie.

My Octopus Teacher (2020)

Your Home

This is the second of four (4) movies selected for our members to watch and discuss in the comments section below, for the month of November. There is no “location” for this movie, other than the privacy of your own home. Free diver Craig Foster spent a year diving off the shores near Cape Town, South Africa. He started to film his experiences and, in time, a curious young octopus captured his attention. By visiting her den and tracking her movements every day for months, he won the animal’s trust. In the film, Foster describes the impact on his life of his relationship with the octopus. The film shows the octopus defending herself against sharks. In one attack, the octopus loses an arm, and then retreats to her den to recover, regenerating the arm. Foster describes the effect of his experience with the octopus on his relationship with his son, and his son's development as a diver and student of marine life. Beautiful underwater cinematography, emotional human spirit, and enlightening for all ages. 1 hour 25 mins Available on Netflix You may also rent inexpensively through other streaming devices. If you do not have the streaming device for the specific movie, you may do an internet search for the movie title to find alternative ways to find and view the movie.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Your Home

This is the third of four (4) movies selected for our members to watch and discuss in the comments section below, for the month of November. There is no “location” for this movie, other than the privacy of your own home. We chose this film to pay tribute to actor Jeff Bridges who is currently fighting a battle with lymphoma. Bridges has starred in many highly acclaimed films over the years, and this is a favorite of several in our group. The Big Lebowski is a comical film that follows Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, who is mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, and is seeking restitution for his ruined life and enlists the help of his buddies to get that restitution. A great comedy. Starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore. 1 hour, 57 mins Available on Amazon Prime You may also rent inexpensively through other streaming devices. If you do not have the streaming device for the specific movie, you may do an internet search for the movie title to find alternative ways to find and view the movie.

Citizens of the World (2019) - Sarasota Film Society

This is the fourth of four (4) movies selected for our members to watch and discuss in the comments section below, for the month of November. There is no “location” for this movie, other than the privacy of your own home. This month (and in the following months), we will feature a film that is provided by the Sarasota Film Society, available for streaming to the general public (see link to the movie below). Although there is a fee to stream the film ($10), we are supporting the non-profit Sarasota Film Society. This month, we have selected a foreign film, Citizens of the World, which is an Italian comedy with English subtitles. Three retirees decide to move away from Rome to find a better standard of living in a country where their meager pensions will go much further. Planning for the trip sees the trio trawl the pubs and restaurants of sun soaked Rome and discover that even at an old age, they can still learn a few lessons about themselves and about life. This is a wonderful, light hearted film that provides us with a reflection of life with characters that will keep us smiling.
