What we're about

Welcome to Ink Affair!

A book club based in Tauranga, New Zealand with meetings being held on the last Sunday of the month (or Monday if it is a public holiday) in the afternoon.

WHO CAN ATTEND
Ink Affair welcomes everyone to participate in our book affairs. Whether you can attend every month, sporadically or one in one particular season.
Individuals must manually register for each event.

Please feel free to take a look through some of our past events to get an idea of what we're about.

General Attendance Policy:
- We encourage you to have read the book (or most of it), but if you didn't get a chance to, don't let that stop you from attending. Some members find it beneficial to read the book after discussing it.
- 3 no-shows and you will be removed from the group.
- It is your responsibility to purchase/borrow the month's book. If you are struggling to locate a copy, please let us know and we will endeavour to locate a copy.
- Please respect everyone's opinions and ideas and use common courtesy when participating.
- Our book affairs last for 1.5 hours. The first hour is to discuss the book and the remaining half an hour is to socialise/exchange books/organise future book affairs.
- Members take turns hosting the book affairs. The host for the month is responsible for leading the discussion but anyone in the group can ask questions.

BOOK RESTRICTIONS
Books must:
- not be excessive in length (we recommend less than 500 pages)
- be in English

FIRST TIME ATTENDING A BOOK CLUB?

Some recommendations:

- Take notes as you read the book (quotes, characters you liked/disliked, etc.). This makes it easier to remember the finer details when discussing the book.

- Bring along any books you may like to exchange with other members which will be done in the final half an hour.

- Bring along a pen and paper to take notes for personal reference.

Autumn 2021 Weekend Readathon

Tauranga

$5.00

Welcome to the Autumn 2021 Readathon!

We have four readathons every year (one per season). A readathon is an event over a set amount of days (in our case, Friday 5pm to Sunday 11:59pm) where you aim to read as much as possible. The person who reads the most (in terms of time), wins, but everyone is essentially a winner if you read more than you normally would have.

You must use an app such as Bookly or Hours Tracker to accurately record your reading time. Please do not send in an estimate as this is less accurate. If you find something another app/programme suitable (e.g. Kindle?), please post in the comments of this event so others are aware.

TO REGISTER:
1. RSVP to this event
2. Deposit $5 in to the Ink Affair bank account. Once I have received this, I will mark you as "paid" on this event
3. Play around with potential apps to record your time and choose a favourite
4. Participate in the readathon. Feel free to use the comment space under this event to check in with others.
5. By Tuesday 7pm, have sent screenshots evidencing your time read in the readathon. I will then assess who has read for the most time, as well as second longest length of time.
6. I will send out an email confirming our 1st and 2nd place winners! Winners will win a Paper Plus voucher. I am hoping to get 10 participants in each Readathon, so this will mean two $25 Paper Plus vouchers ($5 x 10 = $50 divided by two).

There is obviously an element of honesty and trust in participating.

Let's smash this!

MAY 2021: Utopia for Realists : And How We Can Get There by Rutger Bregman

CBK - Craft Bar & Kitchen

Welcome to Ink Affair!

This sounds like it'll be a good book to discuss - thank you to Glen for offering to take it! Please send discussion questions in to him. Note that our Autumn readathon (refer to our other events) falls before this event, so this could be a good book to read that weekend.

May 2021
Title: Utopia for Realists : And How We Can Get There
Author: Rutger Bregman
Description:
In Utopia for Realists, Rutger Bregman shows that we can construct a society with visionary ideas that are, in fact, wholly implementable. Every milestone of civilisation - from the end of slavery to the beginning of democracy - was once considered a utopian fantasy. New utopian ideas such as universal basic income and a fifteen-hour work week can become reality in our lifetime.

From a Canadian city that once completely eradicated poverty, to Richard Nixon's near implementation of a basic income for millions of Americans, Bregman takes us on a journey through history, beyond the traditional left-right divides, as he introduces ideas whose time has come.

JUNE 2021: On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

CBK - Craft Bar & Kitchen

Welcome to Ink Affair!

With a bestsellers rank of 500 on Book Depository out of millions of books, this is sure to be a goodie. As discussed in the April meetup, we will have our mid-year event in the July meetup, rather than this one. Please send suggestions for mid year events in to me (Monica), and discussion questions for the book in to Megan!

June 2021
Title: On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
Author: Ocean Vuong
Description:
** Sunday Times Bestseller **

Brilliant, heartbreaking and highly original, Ocean Vuong's debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, and a testament to the redemptive power of storytelling.

'A marvel' Marlon James

This is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born. It tells of Vietnam, of the lasting impact of war, and of his family's struggle to forge a new future. And it serves as a doorway into parts of Little Dog's life his mother has never known - episodes of bewilderment, fear and passion - all the while moving closer to an unforgettable revelation.
