The mission of this group is to hike, connect with a diverse group of Southern California women, learn and practice relevant outdoor skills, and contribute to the conservation of the region's mountains. The group is intended primarily for those of us that identify as women or nonbinary, but +1's and dogs (depending on the hike) are welcome too. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be scheduling fewer hikes with limited numbers to minimize risk. Feel free to contact me with any questions during this time; I'm happy to help you coordinate and plan your own hikes.
Note that group was created in an era when many of us believed society was post-racial. Recent tragic events, including the death of Brianna Taylor, Dominique "Rem'mie" Fells, and others, have made it impossible to continue to ignore how racism still permeates society today. The outdoors recreational community is in no way separate from this issue. This group seeks to provide a safe space for our BIPOC and LGBTQ+ community members, but also recognizes that this is not an easy or quick process. Our expectation for our meetup group participants is that we all continue to work to educate ourselves on anti-racism so that we can be better allies to our community members, and that we work towards greater equity in the outdoors recreational community by listening to and amplifying the work of our BIPOC community members.
