Neural stimulation technologies: from basic research to clinical applications

About our speakers, Dr. Victor Pikov and Vahag Karayan

Dr. Victor Pikov obtained a PhD in cell biology at Georgetown University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. Since 2002, he has been a scientist and then a senior scientist at the Neural Engineering Program of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) in Pasadena. Since 2010, he is also an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southern California. Dr. Pikov’s research focuses on developing miniature implantable devices for interfacing with the neural tissue. He has two US patent applications: first on a method of modulating neuronal activity (using the microwaves), and second on a method for non-invasive measurement of glucose concentration in the skin (also using the microwaves). Since 2009, he is founder and director of the Alliance for Innovations in Neural Technology and founder and co-chair of the series of International Conferences on Neuroprosthetic Devices. Dr. Pikov is a member of the Bioengineering of Neuroscience study section at NIH and is an associate editor for the journal Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics.

Vahag Karayan has over 15yrs of experience in multiple industries. His expertise spans technology/product/software development with experience in digital marketing and ecommerce. He has deep knowledge in medical device product management and development.

Currently he is a Senior Program Manager at Boston Scientific Neuromodulation and the founder of JAVI Sports.

He has received recognition for his work on Mars Exploration Rovers while at JPL. Following which he won a DARPA grant for “Expendable Local Area Sensors in a Tactically Interconnected Cluster” and served as principal investigator for that program at Techfinity Inc.

Most recently he led a major strategic program aimed at developing next generation Deep Brain Stimulation platform. Vahag is a triple Bruin with three degrees from UCLA including his BS in Electrical Engineering, a MS in Embedded Systems (EE/CS) and a MBA from Anderson.
