Master Sommelier: The Deductive Tasting Method

Taste Like a Master Sommelier: The Deductive Tasting Method

Learn part of the technique used in assessing a wine in a blind tasting.

Did you marvel at the ability of the Master Sommelier candidates in the film "Somm" when they were able to identify the varietal, vintage, region, and sometimes the winemaker in their blind tasting exam? Only 186 people in the world have passed the rigorous Master Sommelier exam and Santa Barbara is proud to have one of them--Brian McClintic--here to teach us part of the Deductive Tasting Method he uses to identify wines in blind wine tastings.

This is a very special opportunity! RSVP and pay today to secure your spot in this exclusive tasting.

Brian, and his business partner Eric Railsback, who has an impressive wine resume himself, will lead us through the tasting, explaining the steps. Included will be tips on evaluating clarity, brightness, color, concentration, rim variation, presence of gas or sediment and viscosity. Also, obvious flaws, intensity, age assessment, fruit, non-fruit aromas, earthiness and wood, as well as the standards for palate assessment.

Limit: 30 participants! Sign up and pay today to be one of the fortunate participants in this unrivaled opportunity.

Exclusive Wine Tasting With Master Sommelier

Over four decades, only 186 people in the world have earned the title of Master Sommelier. The test is that difficult! Applicants have to pass a rigorous written exam, a test of their wine service skills, and a test in which they need to identify the varietal, vintage, region and perhaps the brand of six wines--in a blind tasting with a total time of just 25 minutes.

Fresh from the hit film "Somm", Brian McClintic and Eric Railsback will be giving Inside Wine Santa Barbara the inside scoop on how to taste wine at their new wine bar opening this spring.  Caveau Bar a' Vins will be ideally situated in Santa Barbara's "wine ghetto" at 131 Anacapa St.

The documentary "Somm" was a huge hit at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The second screening was nearly impossible to get into, due to the "buzz" generated at the first screening. But, "Somm" has been picked up for theatrical distribution, so you'll have a second chance to see it. This charming film follows a group of young sommeliers as they prepare for this nearly impossible exam.

Please join Inside Wine Santa Barbara with Master Sommelier Brian McClintic and his business partner Eric Railsback for a fun and educational wine tasting. Don't miss this exclusive opportunity. Attendance limited to 30. CLICK the "RSVP" button at top right to reserve your spot.

Varietal Tasting, May 30th, 6 p.m. Price: $45 general public; $40 for Inside Wine Santa Barbara members who have paid their yearly membership dues of $15. Because the Meetup platform is limited, please pay $45 when you RSVP; if you are a paid member, we will issue you the $5 refund. Non-member guests of members pay $45.

Watch a trailer for "Somm" on their Facebook page.
