Real Benefits of Meditation

InsightLA Meditation

Discover and cultivate the real benefits of mindfulness meditation in this guided meditation class. We will focus on calming the mind, being in the body, or opening the heart each of which allow more ease, clarity, and many other real benefits of meditation into every day life. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and build community with like-minded people. All levels are welcome from first-timers to advanced. No registration required. This class is freely offered. Donations are welcomed. Teacher Bio: JD Lloyd was first exposed to mindfulness meditation in 1994, when a friend recommended the plainly-spoken inspiration of Steven Levine’s book A Gradual Awakening. He is a long-time member of the InsightLA Meditation Community, where he teaches Essentials of Mindfulness classes and leads mindfulness sitting groups. JD has received specialized training to conduct Mindful Self Compassion courses, which he facilitates at InsightLA, University of Southern CA, and the Cancer Support Community’s Benjamin Center. JD is particularly drawn to Lovingkindness and Mindful Self-Compassion meditation practices as paths toward self-acceptance and open-hearted connection with others. He appreciates the outdoors and the arts – especially film, photography and poetry. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing and enjoys weaving poetry and story-telling into his teaching.

Mindful Transitions: For the Transgender Community

4300 Melrose Ave

This is an opportunity for people who identify as transgender to practice meditation together, build community and explore the experience of transition. Transition means something different for everyone and can involve a whole range of possible steps, including social, medical and legal changes. Whether you are just beginning your transition or if you began your transition decades ago, your experience is relevant and welcome. This is an opportunity to be mindful of our inner sense of who we are, how we understand our gender, and how we wish to be seen. We will also explore ways to offer tenderness and compassion to ourselves, both for the ways we may have internalized transphobia and for the difficulty of living in a cis-normative world. The format will include a lightly guided meditation, opportunities to share your experience of transition, both the challenges and the celebrations, in larger group discussion and/or in small groups. All people under the trans umbrella are welcome to attend regardless of where you exist along the gender spectrum. This includes but not limited to people who identify as trans women, trans men, men and women of trans experience, non-binary, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, genderfluid and those who are questioning their gender identity. Regardless of where you are in your gender journey, this is a place to let go and just be! This event happens every First Sunday of the month from 3:30pm - 5:30pm at InsightLA East Hollywood. No prior meditation experience necessary. This is a donation-based offering. Suggested donation is $10 - $25. No one turned away for lack of funds. Register in advance or just drop-in. https://insightla.org/Calendar/Event-Calendar/EventId/1153/e/mindful-transitions-for-the-transgender-community-5-may-2019
