Several of you have expressed interest in visiting a number of houses of worship as a group. I am happy to announce that we are invited to observe Friday prayers and sermon at the Muslim Community Center on Elston.
I understand that the scheduled time is not ideal for people who work traditional hours but we can't change a religious service to our own convenience.
This service will last about an hour. We will remove our shoes before entering the prayer hall and sit silently together; we will not be divided by gender. There will be around 700 worshipers in attendance. I've been to this once before, the sermon was given in Arabic and lasted around 40 minutes. The prayer is also in Arabic and lasts about 10 minutes.
I understand there will also be an opportunity to ask the Imam questions following the service.
Typically, I expect some people who RSVP 'yes' to be no shows; that is a normal part of social meetups. We need to be more prudent on this one since we are guests. They need to know how many of us there will be and I need to know who to look for, so stick to your word on this one. You can change it if your schedule changes but please stick with it the day of.
