ARCHEOLOGICAL AZTEC SITE TEXCOTZINGO / BAÑOS DE NEZAHUALCÓYOTL
The impressive archeological site of Texcotzingo / Baños de Nezahualcóyotl acted as the summer imperial gardens, including imperial and courtly residences and fantastic waterworks of the Aztecs. Texcotzingo was designed and created by Nezahualcoyotl, in the 15th century. These imperial gardens were used to collect and display plant and animal specimens towards an encyclopedic understanding of fauna and flora of the whole of the Aztec empire as well as the cultivation of medicinals. Dedicated to the rain god Tlaloc, (He Who Makes the Plants Spring Up), Texcotzingo was designed by incorporating Aztec myths through sculpture depicting gods and sacred number observances. New hydraulic projects and terrace gardens transformed the previously un-arable land into lush edible gardens.
HACIENDA AND NATIONAL PARK MOLINO DE FLORES
The hacienda was declared a national park by President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1937. Due to its impressive style and excelent condition, the hacienda has been used as a set for numerous Mexican and foreign films. Most of the buildings on the site, including the main residence, the Church of San Joaquin, and the Chapel of Señor de la Presa (Lord of the Dam), were constructed by Miguel de Cervantes and his wife. The chapel is build out of the rockface, a magnificant piece of work. The hacienda reached its peak in the late 19th century.
