    ABOUT THE BOESMANSKLOOF BERGTREIN COTTAGES

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fully equipped cottages where we are staying are very private and safe with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and of the Boesmanskloof Valley from our balcony. There are no power points in the accommodation, to give it a rustic feel. There is a small library in every cottage to satisfy your needs. The bathrooms have warm water shower and toilet. Open plan kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware, cutlery, crockery, cloths, dishwashing liquid etc. Two-plate gas stove and gas fridge. For the dining area, the built-in wood sleeper table gives a warm feeling of love, joy and a peace of mind. Outside braai-barbeque facilities. In front of the house is a veranda for relaxing and to spent time amongst the majestic mountains and fynbos.  This is also where you can have your outside braai.

Japie and Sandra Oosthuizen are the proud owners of Eagle’s Nest Guest House and Onverwacht Cottages. Located halfway between the twin villages McGregor and Greyton in the Western Cape, South Africa. A 2h Drive from Cape Town via Worcester, Robertson and  then through McGregor brings you to what is often  called “The Road to Nowhere”!

This nature lover’s paradises lies up in the heart of the Sonderend Mountains and are also surrounded with mountain peaks of the Langeberge and Galgeberg.

Both accommodation places are linked with the famous Boesmanskloof HikingTrail also known as the McGregor-Greyton Trail and Die Galg. This popular Trail is a 16 km Trail of +- 6h between Greyton and McGregor. Eagle’s Nest and Onverwacht Cottages are an ideal getaway for naturelovers, week-enders, hikers, and mountainbikers.

With each visit you will find that the area has changed, because Fynbos changes with the seasons.  The different protea gardens and spectacular birdlife makes the trail more magical.  If you are lucky you will notice a view bucks in groups. They are tamed. Please don’t scare them.

    MORE ABOUT BOESMANSKLOOF PASS

    ----------------------------------------------------------

This seldom driven gem of a pass ends in a dead end with a story attached. It is frequently referred to in its Afrikaans format - Boesmanskloofpas and is also called the "Road to Nowhere". The pass connects the town of McGregor with the farm Die Galg at the summit, where it ends. However in the early 1900's there was a strong need to build a road directly from McGregor to Greyton, which is a scant 25 kms to the west. The road was subsequently built and continues over the neck (Die Galg) and then descends along the northern side of the ravine, where the road was literally hacked out of the mountainside. This proved to be an onerous and expensive project and was abandoned due to lack of funds.

    Digging into the details:

Between 1865 and 1880 the first attempt was made to build the road. This was done on a tiny budget with the road being built simultaneously from both towns. Funds ran out on the McGregor side at the Rietvlei farm and on the Greyton side progress was only made as far as Perdekop. The project lay dormant for 36 years till 1916 when pressure was put on local government to restart the project. A second attempt was launched in 1924. A three year feasibility study ensued whereafter the sum of 25,310 Pounds Sterling was granted for the completion of the road. When war broke out, construction on the pass was halted, but the National Roads Dept. arranged to make use of some Italian POW's as well as parolees. Work commenced again in 1936 and once again the construction was halted in 1941 when the WW2 war effort required the manpower and capital for more important things.

    The road to nowhere

In November 1942, a request was denied to have the Italian POW's returned to complete the project. The engineer in charge of the 1936 attempt was Ted Hittersay. The work was done by hand using picks, shovels, crowbars, wheelbarrows and carts. Five foremen managed the work crews. Amongst these were Orrie and Jan Oosthuizen (Jan managed the dynamite) and Chrisjan Geldenhuys drove the only truck available ferrying food and people to the constructtion site. On Barry's farm the remnants of the dynamite store can still be seen above the cottage called 'Eagles Nest'.

Out of this saga came a wonderful blessing with the little town of McGregor (and Greyton to a lesser extent) being at the end of the so-called road to nowhere. This slowed down developement and allowed the village to retain its charm and character - the very essence of what attracts visitors today.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    ABOUT THE WATERKLOOF TRAIL

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Waterkloof is a pristine oasis situated in the heart of the massive Riviersonderend Mountains.  You will find the turn off to the beautiful Waterkloof between the small town McGregor,Western Cape and “The Road to Nowhere” where  Onverwacht Flora Accommodation and Eagle’s Nest Guesthouse are situated.

At the Waterkloof turn off you will see stretched out mountain ranges and fynbos which are pleasing to the eye.  Beautiful Klipspringers and Grysboks graze peacefully (if it is your lucky day) as long as they are not disturbed.

With the twist of the road when you reach the beautiful Wabome you become aware of the masses white river stones which gives reason to believe that there might be water somewhere.  Thick growth of ferns, reeds and fynbos becomes more and more visible.

It is then when you are suddenly met sneak previews of a stretched out river between the green flora.  Moving nearer, the sound of the flowing water becomes more audible.  Waterkloof’s water comes from a south western direction from fountains and rain water during the rainfall season.  The river flows in a north easterly direction to a reservoir.  It is a constantly flowing river.
