    Cost: R[masked] per person to secure your booking. Duration: 2 hours. The trip price includes the guided tour, Kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, professional & experienced guide with emphasis on safety. After the event we will meet up for coffee / tea in Simons Town.

    One of the most unique places in the world - a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. We meet at the town jetty in Simon's Town for a short introduction to paddling technique and a safety briefing. We then paddle out past the civilian and Naval Harbour where you get a bonus close up view of our biggest naval vessels and out to Boulder's Beach to see the penguins. On the way we will normally encounter a number of Cape Fur seals resting in kelp beds or next to the harbour wall. If the time and tide is right we may stop on a beach for a swimming break, or else we swim from the kayaks.

    Our double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience and children 10 and up.  This is a trip every able bodied individual can and should do.

    On the tour you will get to see the following up close. Penguins of course, cormorants, terns, gulls and the marvellous oystercatcher. Fish swimming under your kayak. Seals will often gambol around the kayaks and no, you won't see any sharks. But most important you will see the ocean (and the land!) from one of the best perspectives you never have before.

    Let yourself be drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love.” ~ Rumi

    ===================================>

    * Where ever possible we will share the Transport in getting there.

    ===================================>

    The trips leave from the Simon's Town waterfront where Derek from Kayak Cape Town gives everyone a quick but thorough run-down on how to handle a paddle and kayak and what to do, and not do, when out on the ocean.  The kayaks are quite stable so you can relax and enjoy the stunning views, sounds and smells of all around.

    You get to go quite close to the SA Navy and on route Derek will give us a guided tour of the history of Simon’s Town and the Navy.  From here we head on south towards Boulders and the world famous penguin colony.

    On route we pass the penguin colony and being so close certainly offers different perspective. At Boulders beach we will stop and stretch your legs or have a quick swim to cool as it will be mid-summer.

    ABOUT KAYAK CAPE TOWN - http://kayakcapetown.co.za/

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Kayak Cape Town passion and mission is to introduce people to the pleasures of kayaking on the ocean and seeing and learning about the famous Penguin colony of Boulders Beach.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Can I really do this, I've never paddled before?

    Sure you can. 99% of our customers have not been in a kayak before.

    @@ How fit do I have to be?

    Not very. If you can do a one hour walk then you can do this. It's only when it's very windy that the trip becomes quite strenuous. And if it's very windy we don't go out - unless you want to do some wind wave surfing which is for the fit and adventurous.

    @@How many people do you take?

    We have 10 double kayaks so that's 20 people max. If you are more than that we normally split the group so half paddle the outward leg, meet the rest on the beach and swap so the other half paddle back.

    @@I'm nearly sixty? Can I do it?

    Like I said, if you can do a one hour walk then you can do it. We've had many older customers and as long as you feel good you'll be fine.

    @@ Is there a weight limit?

    Over 120kg is probably pushing it.

    @@ What about kids?

    Generally from 10 years up kids are fine, especially if they are with an adult in the boat. Younger than that they need a strong adult with them because the adult does pretty much all the work.

    @@ Will I fall off?

    Almost certainly not because our kayaks are hugely stable. About three people a year on average fall in and that's usually because they are messing about. Anyway, it's also very easy to get back on. Besides it's False Bay and the water is warm!

    @@ What kind of boats are they?

    We use very stable two person sit-on-top type of kayaks. We find people who have never paddled before become immediately comfortable because they don't feel constricted as they would in a sit-inside type of kayak and also feel that should they fall off it would be easy to get back on. They also like the fact that they are sharing the paddling with another person - usually their partner of course.

    @@ What must I wear?

    Wear shorts and a T shirt. A hat and sunscreen too. You can go barefoot but sandals are a good idea (not flip flops as they tend to come off when you walk in water). You will get wet so bring a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards. In winter longs like tracksuit bottoms and a sweater or windbreaker will be better.

    @@ When is the best time of year?

    You probably think summer only, right? You are dead wrong - all year round is best. Summer of course has warm sun and warm water but it also brings many windy days. Winter on the other hand is cooler and has many completely calm, warm, beautiful days. In winter there is also a good chance of seeing whales. In answer, the best time of year to paddle is the time you are available to do it.

    @@ What if the weather is bad?

    You must always call in the morning before you leave for the trip to check the weather. If it's cancelled then we try and get you on the next nice day if you can make it. Note that a rainy day is not "bad weather", only a windy day is.

    ABOUT THE BOULDERS PENGUIN COLONY

    -----------------------------------------------------

    ** The Boulders Colony

    African Penquin Illustration In 1983 a pair of African penguins were spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders and in 1985 they began to lay. Since then the colony has grown rapidly, increasing initially at about 60% a year. By 1997 there were 2350 adult birds. Such a quick growth of the colony was the result of immigration, particularly from Dyer Island, as well as by reproduction. Birds have probably come to False Bay because of the good fishing available since commercial purse seine fishing has been banned in the Bay. Although Simon's Town is very proud of its penguins, nearby residents suffered badly as the birds invaded their gardens, destroyed the undergrowth and were generally very noisy and messy. The great increase in tourists has also been a problem. As a result, the area has now been taken over by Cape Peninsula National Park, the birds have been restrained from wandering inland by a fence, board walks and an information room have all been established. Boulders still remains the only place in the world where one can actually swim amongst the penguins as they have continued to invade more beaches. They are remarkably untroubled by people but one should avoid harassing them by getting too close or chasing them. Beware!! They have a vicious bite.

    ** Conservation

    Because they live so far north, and in a relatively accessible region, African penguins have been particularly vulnerable to human depredation. From the time of time of the first Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652 penguins were an invaluable addition to the settlers' food supply. Penguin eggs have also been regarded as a delicacy and were sold and eaten well into the twentieth century. In more recent times the decline in food supply has forced penguins to adapt their eating habits. Seals, which used to share the same small fish, now increasingly prey on the penguins instead. Oil spills from tankers are also a hazard since the oil clinging to their feathers affects their insulation. As a result of all this, there has been a serious reduction in their numbers, and African penguins are now regarded as an endangered species. There were several million African penguins in the nineteenth century. In 1930 there were still over a million birds but there are now only about[masked] left. All the penguin breeding sites are now protected. At Betty's Bay, another mainland site, a fence has been erected to prevent disturbance from people and predators. This colony has now grown to about 100 pairs. Nevertheless, threats to their safety remain.

    ==> DIRECTIONS

    FROM CAPE TOWN - Driving Directions from Cape Town City Centre:

    BY CAR: Take the M3 motorway, also called The Blue Route, to its end and turn right. About 2km further on at the second traffic light turn left up the mountain on Ou Kaapse Weg. This 12km long mountain pass road has wonderful views through Silvermine and winds down to Sun Valley. Keep straight at the traffic lights and over another hill until you reach a set of traffic lights at a T-junction by the sea in Glencairn. Turn right and Simon's Town is 5kms away. It's a 60 to 70 minute drive from the centre of town

    LOCAL DIRECTIONS ONCE IN SIMONS TOWN - The Shell petrol station on your right is your first landmark as you enter Simon's Town - it's about 700 metres past the Railway Station. Shortly after passing the Shell petrol station you will see ahead of you on your left a blue and white building with a tall mast on it. Turn left into Wharf Street at this building. There is a parking lot just there and there are usually free spaces

    A map and more detailed directions will be sent out closer to the time ;-)
