The number of connected machines in our world has already surpassed the global human population (7.2 billion at this time), nearing 15 billion. It is projected that this number will be over 3X larger than the global human population by 2020. Internet connected machines and systems will continue to grow to nearly 75 billion by 2025. So it is no secret that “IoT” is happening: From Alexa and Siri to self driving cars and predictive maintenance, chances are that you interact with a connected device on a daily basis. If you think about it, your smartphone is the swiss army knife of IoT devices vis a vis the App Store. Yet as ease of use and deployment improves and accessibility increases, certain questions are raised and their answers have important implications: Who is responsible if something goes wrong with a self-directed machine? How can we ensure that these devices aren’t being used against us by bad actors? What is the government’s role in determining the answers to these questions? Part of the problem is the attachment to a label that, for example, places wind turbine vibration sensors in the same jargon-bucket as a voice-activated home speaker that can control our lights. This giant market we call the internet of things, seemingly encompassing everything from wearables to autonomous vehicles to smart homes, factories, and cities, simply does not exist. Yet there is change afoot, reshaping our industries, our lives, and the world itself—change driven by fundamental technological shifts: cheaper, more powerful hardware, nearly ubiquitous connectivity, cloud and edge computing. We’re witnessing an evolution of computing, as it expands from mainframes (one computer for many people) to desktops (one computer per person) to mobile (multiple computers per person) to the phenomenon we see today (one to many computers per “thing”). Ajay Kulkarni explores the underlying changes that are characterizing the next wave of computing happening and shares several ways in which individual businesses and overall industries will be transformed. In IoT, data is constantly in motion. It may move from edge devices, to gateways, to on-premise servers and into the cloud. As we discovered in our last Meetup, computation at the edge is a trend away from centralized to decentralized data processing. Call it what you want, one of the biggest market opportunities for IoT deployments and applications lies within manufacturing. Nowadays our products are almost always assembled by machine: plastic extruders, sheet metal stampers, textile spinning machines, robotic arms programmed for specific tasks. The machines and equipment vary, depending on the product being made, with the manufacturing processes overseen by humans. Until recently, the performance parameters of the machines (e.g., pressure, humidity, moisture, temperature, rotational speed) have been largely invisible to us. In other words, we need to capture data. Consequently, the efficiency of our processes is jeopardized by the fact that we don't know what is happening at all times along our assembly lines. In other words, we don't capture data at all or if we do, we don't put it to actionable use. This is why manufacturing is one of IoT's biggest markets.
