What we're about

We are a collective of individuals using algorithms to automate financial trading of equities, options, futures, forex, crypto, etc.

Our goal is to provide a monthly meetup to discuss the state of the art, share ideas, discuss our own successes/failures, and set up an environment for people to collaborate and improve alongside each other. We do not require anyone to identify themselves, and you do not have to talk about any of your trading/coding activities if you do not want to, or cannot do so because of contractual obligations.

* * * Ground Rules * * *

1. Check your ego at the door.

2. If you're smart enough to find this group and show up, you're smart enough to be professional and respectful to the other members of the group. We are here to learn and advance our skills as a group.

3. Please do not attempt to openly market your services to the group, if someone wants to work with you, they will approach you and you two can continue the conversation discretely.

4. If you're looking to meetup and chat about different crypto projects you're excited about, this is not the group for you. We are code intensive, and our primary focus is building and optimizing systems for superhuman trading capability.

5. Do not push someone to reveal information about their strategy if they do not offer it up freely. The group encourages sharing but there is a limit, some people are not freely at will to disclose certain things about what they do nor should they have to. Proprietary information is sacred in this group, and shared information should be viewed as a gift. Nobody owes you anything.

6. Let people talk when they start to speak up. Not everyone will be comfortable speaking in front of new faces, so please give them a chance to speak their mind. Basically don't talk over each other.

7. You don't need to bring a laptop, but we highly recommend you do. If you've never done any coding in your life, we'll do our best to help you get off the ground but there is inherently going to be some self-study involved if you're looking to get into algorithmic trading.

* * * Meetup Format * * *

The meetups will follow the general format below, and should last somewhere around 2 hours. There will be espresso and hot chocolate, as well as a (usually working) pay-per-oz tap offering kombucha and cold brew. The group meets in Irvine near Main & Jamboree at coworking spaces (check the meetup location for the event you want to attend!). If you are interested in hosting, please reach out to me directly and we can discuss as long as you're located in Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, or South Coast Metro.

1. During the first 10 minutes and prior to the start, members are encouraged to introduce themselves to each other and have small discussions.

2. After icebreakers and meeting each other, we'll open up with a quick discussion of our goals as a group, what we're talking about for the day. Then we'll move to the first topic of discussion, which will be the status report on my own personal journey into algorithmic trading and what I'm currently up to. As time goes on this will likely become more of a progress update instead of a deep dive.

3. The second topic of discussion is purely about code. Machine learning, deep learning, Q learning, reinforcement learning - whatever we're into. I'll start out with interesting new things I've come across, then open the floor to an open format discussion after my initial share. People are welcome to speak about anything related to data science, ai, programming techniques, algorithm techniques, etc. We may stray slightly in our discussions of these techniques, however the main point is to discuss techniques that can be incorporated into actual strategies. Depending on the prior meetings, this may be shortened so we can go deeper on the trading side. If we've hammered down some trading for a bit, we might go long on the deep learning side.

4. The third topic of discussion will be trading strategies, and we are going to try to limit the strategies we discuss to those that have the ability to be automated in some capacity. This will be another initial share from myself as the leader, followed by an open floor to anyone who wants to talk about strategies they're using, learning about, or want to learn more about. People from all sorts of different backgrounds will be attending, so if your background is finance, please try to water it down into simpler terms for those of us that might not be familiar with the full spectrum of financial vernacular.

5. Closing remarks and goodbyes.

Deep Learning & Statistics For Algotrading

2640 Main Street

Are you interested in deep learning and want to see how it can be applied to trading? Look no further, this is the meetup for you! We'll be going through a wealth of code and technical approaches that can be applied to algorithmic trading strategies. Areas of interest for these discussions: reinforcement learning, deep Q learning, statistical analyses, You do NOT need ANY programming experience to join us! One major point of the group is to pair up finance professionals and talented programmers to mutually learn from each other. Hopefully, the meetings can spark some collaboration on successful implementations of algotrading! Yes, there will be jupyter notebooks and snippets of code offered to group as interesting things are developed. We will coordinate the file sharing and information links over slack, so please join our channel with the link below! This event is the complement to our other biweekly event, placing a focus on the programming and machine learning techniques rather than actual trading strategies. I highly suggest attending both events to get a well rounded base of knowledge, and to meet experts in both finance and machine learning!

Slack Discussion - Collaboration Team

ONLINE ONLY EVENT! It's time we pair up finance professionals and coding talent to take our collective algotrading game to the next level. This is the team I have alluded to in our prior meetups! This meeting is for the hardcores of the group, working on our shared Irvine Algotrading strategies deployed in Quantopian and Ninja Trader. We'll chat on Slack to catch up and share progress on whatever it is we're doing as a group. The team is for active participants, but feel free to observe. We will be sharing information and code etc. in an open source manner, but unless you're involved in the team activities you may become lost quite quickly. This meetup is our virtual collaborative space, and hopefully by doing it online we can provide better access to the group members who are not local to Irvine. Please join our Slack channel here: https://join.slack.com/t/irvinealgotrading/shared_invite/enQtNTc0NTAzNDk1MjIwLWEwY2IwZmYzMDRiNWI2OWU1NDVlNzI1MTEwOGFlNzgyNjYyYjlhNWZmNjI3ZGJhMzUzOWVkNmFhYjc5NWM2MDE People are encouraged to team up and explore as much as possible, sharing expertise and testing out ideas. If all goes well, we'll be testing and updating each other on the progress of our neural network approach and various statistical techniques. For the financial gurus involved, we can dedicate some programmers to implementing their approaches and report back on backtest results etc.

Automated Trading Strategy Workshop

2640 Main Street

Join us for a thought-provoking evening as we demonstrate and discuss various strategies for automated trading algorithms! This meetup is a workshop where we'll not only talking about trading, but we'll do full on backtesting and optimization of a strategy live as we hold an open discussion. We definitely suggest bringing your laptop to try out strategies along with us, but no laptops are required. There's a flatscreen in the room projecting my computer screen so everyone can see how the strategies are setup and backtested via ninjatrader or quantopian (depending on what I feel like using). Of the biweekly meetings, this meetup is centered on the financial and statistical side of algotrading, avoiding deep dives into the technical aspects of what we're doing. If you want to learn more about trading, or your expertise is centered in finance and you want to get into algotrading, this is the meetup for you! Please install Ninja Trader 8 and register an account on Quantopian if you want to build and test algorithms with us. Waters will be provided, the WiFi is pretty good, and parking is a breeze.
