3G in Turkey - How's a visiting geek to survive?

Hi all,

Apologies for the slightly more off-topic post but I've just spent the last few days getting my head around the fact that I can't use my mobile phone in Turkey thanks to the IMEI blocking that seems unique to the country :(

I'm planning on staying in Turkey for up to 3 months and the prospect of no 3G or even calls on my mobile is unthinkable! As fellow hackers I'm sure you'll understand and hope you might have a solution for me :)

It seems my only options are:

  • Pay the $60 fee and hope to get through the bureaucracy of registering my phone (sounds like a pain, potentially won't work & the $60 is probably more than my old smart phone is worth!)
  • Buy a new phone (possible but the phone I'd like to buy doesn't seem available here and phones seem expensive in Turkey)
  • Go without a phone or mobile internet

Is there any way around this that I'm missing?

Thanks for any tips.

Cheers,

Henare

Hi,
IMEI registration looks like the best option. And other than the idiotic $60 fee, it's quite an effortless process. Our colleagues at work, coming to Turkey for long periods done it before without a problem.
