You talking to me? Designing for voice

  • November 30 · 6:30 PM
  • Pivotal Labs

Hype has been building for Voice Interaction over the past few years, with Amazon's Alexa taking us to new levels of expectation.

We wanted to review this popular subject, apply some considered critique, and work through some of the design challenges that we could be presenetd with in the coming years.

Ben Sauer, from Clearleft, will be presenting a session before facilitating a workshop around designing voice interfaces for the future.

Open the pod bay doors, designer — Ben Sauer, Clearleft

Right now voice UIs like Siri are, well…. hit and miss. But all the big players are heavily investing in voice UI, let’s suppose it will be much smarter, soon. What does that mean for us designers? Will screen UI even be required? Should we be changing our workflow now? In this talk, Ben will look at the current capabilities of Voice UIs, how the APIs are connecting to apps, what’s next, and how this might change our design process and products.

What happened to Meetup's waiting list feature? That used to work well to get last minute places. Hope you can share the info later! Best

Thanks Jussi! I managed to get a ticket, hope someone else can use Andy's

Hi Gabriella, unfortunately Meetup doesn't enable the waitlist feature for paid events. Hence the best place to look for spare tickets is on this page and asking for last minute cancellations.

This page states that the meetup is full. Do you really have a space suitable for only 39 people? While you gathered a community of 2,500+ people? Is finding a larger venue something you consider for the near future? Or do you try to keep it as small and personal as possible? Thanks for sharing our rationale behind …

      Hi Martin,

We deliberately keep events small for several reasons:
      – greater intimacy
      – less intimidation for speakers so we can get people with great content not just showpeople
      – get spaces where we don't need a microphone for speaker or audiences asking questions
      – less pressure for us organisers

We appreciate it's difficult to get tickets but haven't managed to develop a solution that works for everyone.

Yes, mentioned this problem last time. You can RSVP in the meetup app, but you are not actually "in" until you pay. And the native app does not show that option. Ideally the RSVP should me the last step of a payment flow.

Is is a pay at the door event or can I pay in advance online?

    November 23

    • Tim D.

Thanks Jason. How do I do this? There doesn't appear to be a link?

      November 23

    • Tim D.

Okay, the app doesn't provide this feature. Found it on the website. Cheers
