BioJerusalem (http://www.biojerusalem.org.il/), a Jerusalem Development Authority (http://www.jda.gov.il/english.aspx) initiative, focuses on promoting the Bio-Med industry in Jerusalem. (See introductory video http://www.biojerusalem.org.il/video.asp)
Dr Shai Melcer, the new Executive Director of BioJerusalem (http://www.biojerusalem.org.il/), will show how BioJerusalem (http://www.biojerusalem.org.il/) aims to utilize the unique and formidable resources that Jerusalem has in life sciences fields to establish the leading Bio-Med industrial center in the country. Jerusalem has Israel's best university (Hebrew University of Jerusalem (http://new.huji.ac.il/en)), three Bio-Med-focused colleges (Jerusalem College of Technology Lev Academic Center (http://jct.ac.il), Azrieli College of Engineering (http://english.jce.ac.il/) and Hadassah College Jerusalem (http://en.hadassah.ac.il/)), two of Israel's leading hospitals (Shaare Zedek Medical Center (http://www.szmc.org.il/Default.aspx?alias=www.szmc.org.il/en) and Hadassah Medical Center (http://www.hadassah-med.com/)), significant R&D infrastructure available to the Bio-Med industry, as well as hosting about half of Israel's bio-medical and clinical research.
The success of Bio-Med in Jerusalem will largely depend on how much the local Bio-Med community is engaged in the development of a vibrant Bio-Med entrepreneurial culture and how different resources and infrastructure are leveraged.
The presentation of BioJerusalem (http://www.biojerusalem.org.il/)'s vision will be followed by discussion with the audience.

Research at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center (http://www.szmc.org.il/Default.aspx?alias=www.szmc.org.il/en)
Over the past several years there has been a significant increase in both the volume and cutting edge research conducted at Shaare Zedek Medical Center (http://www.szmc.org.il/Default.aspx?alias=www.szmc.org.il/en). This stems primarily from the hospital staff’s growing involvement in research and the increasing recognition of the hospital by other national and international academic institutions.
In addition, several recent major administrative reforms in the managerial sector have further facilitated research endeavors in the hospital. These major steps include the appointment of a research affiliate to Director General Prof. Jonathan Halevy in 2009 (Prof. Dan Turner) as an integral partner in the senior hospital management. This paved the way for an agreement with Yissum, the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University, in June 2011. This strategic collaboration has vastly extended research opportunities and joint projects with laboratories at the Hebrew University and enables Shaare Zedek's researchers to benefit from Yissum’s professional intellectual property management services.
In the last 18 months, Shaare Zedek has signed two license agreements, and four patents are pending. In addition, more than ten projects are in different stages of the commercialization process, compared to none in the years preceding these reforms. Finally, theShaare Zedek Research & Development Authority (http://www.szmc.org.il/ResearchReport/tabid/1148/Default.aspx), which was established in September 2011 and is headed by Dr. Keren-Or Amar, has prioritized the coordination of research activities in the hospital.
