One of the most beautiful public parks in the Johannesburg, The Wilds is a unique attraction of 16 hectares entirely devoted to indigenous South African flora.

Originally owned, along with Houghton Estate, by Barney Barnato's JCI Company, the land was donated to the City in 1924 with the condition that it remains in its natural state and open to the public and was developed into a park in 1938.

The eastern and western side of The Wilds EACH have a 4km walking trail so total 8km. The entire park on both sides is fenced off.

Johannesburg-based artist, James Delaney, made 67 sculptures of owls and hung them in a yellowwood tree forest in The Wilds (see picture below). The purpose is to attract more people to the park as an incentive for Joburg Parks to keep maintaining and improving the park.

COST - free
MEET at 8.15 for 8.30am.

Secure parking is available on the fenced and guarded parking lot on the west side of Houghton Drive just north of the entrance to Roedean School.

Traveling north (towards Pretoria) on Houghton Drive drive past Roedean School on your left and then look for an opening in the fence which is the entrance to the parking lot.

BRUNCH - We will go to Mugg&Bean at nearby Killarney Mall (5 min drive). Originally we were supposed to have brunch at the Sunnyside Park Hotel but something went wrong even though arrangements were made early May - next time we will try again.
