PhotoLecture: Adobe Photoshop Lecture - 1

Put your world of Photography at your fingertips with Photoshop!!

This is a Free Lecture and we changed the venue to The Hong Kong Art Visual Centre - The Lecture Theater for 70 members Max.

Please note that time changed to 7pm!!!

Reception starts at 630pm at the Lecture Theatre.

Our members don't need to buy drinks to attend the lecture and JPG operation fund responds HK$125.00 for the venue fee.

We'll put the donation box on the entry, anyone with intention to donate money to JPG Operation fund, we welcome

Topics covered:

1) Facial Touch-Up Techniques ( simple touch-up for beginners and professional touch-up for hard core PS users )

2) Real Black & White adjustments. ( fully adjust every little color for great B&W photos )

The lecturer, Ron, is giving free lessons. In HK, giving anything free is considered crazy.

He is an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop. For each Photoshop Class, he will teach just 2 tricks. Too many and you'll be stumped. You can bring your laptops (charge batteries first!) and a mouse with Photoshop (any version) installed and he will provide the picture files and pdf notes for you to use via USB thumb drive. Those without laptops will receive email of the same files after the lecture.

@Ron, what about Visual Effects? The outing on the 26th Oct event, the subject is Jelly Fish. What about we put the skin colour onto the Jelly Fish? The photographs as the base for development?? Are you interested?

I'm thinking of preparing a different kind of Photoshop Lecture. You guys can give me ideas. It has to be related to photography. There are some things that Apple Aperture or Adobe Lightroom can't do. So the only alternative is Photoshop. I have many years of experience to enhance and improve a photo. Some great shots were ruined by wrong settings or a telephone pole grew out of a subject's head. Some call it special effects. I call it dirty tricks. Anyone have ideas?

I will email them later today and we'll discuss by then. Let them know the requirement etc. I am not sure what subject they are studying and I believe we give them a bit time for discussion. Free formal professional lecture is not easy to find in Hong Kong for their large no. of students. We'll figure out how to organize it. Speak soon!

I certainly would do another similar lecture for them, of course. Hope they're prepared cos it's not easy for the casual user. Students who study Graphic Design would have more interest in this. Photoshop is not for every photographer.

@Ron, I spoke with Photographic Society, HKUSU c/o Hong Kong University Students' Union today. They missed your lecture!!!
Do you think if we can do another one for them?? They have 200 members eagerly to learn, kindly let me know your thought....

Got to meet new members which is always nice.I think Adobe Photoshop would be a bit too difficult for me, but i will attend the next classes still, it's very impressive to watch the pros do magic with it :] Thanks Ron :]

You're welcome, Jenny! I know you're busy. Take care of your work. We'll take care of JPG Meetup when you're not available.

    Hi All.
This Photoshop Lecture was an Intermediate class. You'd have to know Photoshop to a certain degree to know what the lecturer was talking about. It was my presumption that most of the attendees won't know PS to the level that I was teaching. As we're all photographers, we should have the fun of taking photos and not worry about the software stuff too much.
I'm recommending that we all use Adobe Lightroom as the best software to use for all Windows or Mac platforms. For Macs, we have Aperture, an excellent photo editing software in itself. But Aperture is a memory hog and quite sluggish even with multi-core Macs and lots of RAM installed. I know this as I use both apps constantly.
For those guys who needs to improve their PS skills to a higher level, please let me know and I'll arrange something to accommodate them. Keep in mind that PS is quite intimidating for the casual user. Thanks for coming, guys!

Thanks Ron for organizing the event for the members learning from your knowledge. Unfortunately, I was stuck at work that I cannot attend. I will attend the next one. Salue!

Thanks Ron for sharing his professional experience in using photoshop. I agreed with his view that Lightroom is more than enough when one only requires a tool to do basic touch up for daily photos....

Very useful and well-thought out lecture, the only thing was we thought we were going to be able to work on a photoshop file while there.. and didn't, so it was a bit silly lugging our laptops in. However being able to download the file earlier, and later another one hopefully, means we can do the work at home ourselves. Well worth it!

    @Emily D, we'll have PhotoLecture: Adobe Photoshop Lecture - 2. So, don't worry and have a safe trip ;-)

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

Mine is Photoshop CS5 but Photoshop Elements is ok for home user or hobbyist.

    September 17, 2011

  • ron

I'll be teaching the parts of Photoshop that is useful for photographers. If anyone wants to start on PS, get Photoshop Elements 9. It's fully Photoshop and it's a teaching programme at the same time. I think that's the best way to learn PS.

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

Thanks Ronnie. I never use Lightroom or Aperture but my bro showed me once. So, I don't really know how they are handy for Photographers coz they insisted me to start with Adobe Photoshop and I draw with Adobe Illustrator.

    September 17, 2011

  • ron

Having used Lightroom, Aperture and Photoshop constantly, I find PS to be difficult, even for seasoned pros. I've used PS since version 3.0 and that's in 1994. It's easier for me because it was a gradual improvement and change over the years. A person who starts learning PS now will feel suicidal. It's like sitting in a Boeing 747 cockpit and you're overwhelmed with a hundred instruments staring at you. LR is more like a Toyota Prius dashboard, easy to understand and easy to use.

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

Yes I understand well. I use Adobe Illustrator for my work, so it's worth for me to learn Adobe Photoshop from starting processing my photos and the Visual Effects that I am looking for, I am sure LR cannot meet the requirement, the effect coming out without heavy retouching but very soft fine art. I'll bring the book to show Ronnie in the afternoon.

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

Yes Wing and thanks. However, LR cannot meet my requirement to do Visual Effects. That's why I was insisted to learn Adobe Photoshop from the very beginning. It's worth for members stay with LR and come to understand better of Adobe Photoshop.

    September 17, 2011

  • Katherine

Jenny, sounds interesting to me and I did not realise my painting knowledge can apply to Photoshop. Yes, layers are all we need to do to create painting especially oil on canvas. Let's discuss more later this afternoon..

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

@Katherine, you do painting (me too!!), it's quite easy to understand the theory of Adobe Photoshop by their layers. It is actually the same theory how we do painting but the tool on the software. I have idea to combine the painting/ sketching and photography together to form an art by using Adobe Photoshop. From the Photography image and we draw back part of the image on the works. I am sure Ronnie can help on the content development. Let's talk more this afternoon we meet up....

    September 17, 2011

  • Cool J.

@Ronnie, I very much appreciate of your Photoshop skill and I understand this is a very basic lecture. For the members who have the basic skill, I am interested to learn something more advanced on Visual Effects, both artistic and technical challenges and I believe it becomes a new form of art for Photography, check http://www.chrysaora.com/
It is also the reason why I was insisted to learn Adobe Photoshop, not LR at my very beginning.

    September 17, 2011

  • Katherine

Ron, I also use Lightroom. Glad that you mentioned that! I will come to your lecture. Thanks.

    September 15, 2011

  • ron

Persy, almost every photo editing software we use now like Lightroom, Aperture, iPhoto, etc., has derived from the foundations in Photoshop. The Black & White tutorial will be relevant for you. Those controls are available in Lightroom.

    September 8, 2011

  • Persy

I usually use lightroom. Do you think this lecture will be irrelevant for me as I seldom use photoshop?
