DSLR Movie Production Event (Re-Post)

  • Oct 13, 2012 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We are going to take a small step up from our regular photography for a special event. It is experimental and I hope it can provide us some new skills in learning photography. As you all know, many of the new DSLR's can shoot excellent video in HD.
We are asking for members to post as many shots of their best photos here. The photo can be heavily Photoshopped or manipulated with special effects. The organizers will select 10 of the photos and weave them into a story.

Preferably, the photos you submit will be shot in Hong Kong so we can create the movie here. But there will be some photos shot overseas and we'll try to find a location similar to your photo. We will write a story for a 20 minute movie based on the photos. During the movie, some of these scenes from the photos will be re-created.

Based on the story, we may need to have some of you act in certain scenes. So some of you may become actors and actresses. We'll try to write the story without any speaking parts, if possible. We will get MUA to help in the makeup and dressing.
I got this idea from Ron Howard's 'When You Find Me.' It's short movie using this technique.

After everyone submits their photos in a week or two, we'll have a meeting to start the selection process. I'm scheduling this event a month from today. Let's see the photos first. You can start uploading your photos immediately by going to the Photos section at the top of the page. Look for the Album 'DSLR Movie Production Event (Re-Post)' and add your photos there.

We'll also be filming the whole process of making the movie. We'll call it 'The Making of .....".

Here's a Behind The Scenes clip of 'When You Find Me'. Click on it to start the movie.

Here's the Movie itself.

Here's how Magic Lantern works for Canon EOS DSLR users.

This Movie Production meet-up was super & well organized! Ron is a real pro, he covered and substantially explained the demands and responsibilities of movie production, and made it interesting and fun; can't wait for the next shoot!!

Ron Sogo entrance is exit D for mtr...

    October 13, 2012

  • Janis

Which entrance? I can't find anyone like that?

    October 13, 2012

  • ron

I'm here at Sogo entrance. You'll see a person lying on a bed in white sheets. I'm standing next to it with my camera around my neck. I'm tall with blue jeans.

    October 13, 2012

  • ron

Haha...Henry! You'll might be made up as an old man in some scenes. You'll be filming other scenes without the old man. We'll see. Can you portray and old man sitting on a bench? No acting required. Just look old and senile..

  • Henry L.

Cheers. However, if really desperate, i dont mind being that extra guy that walks in the distant background, where viewers cant even really identify whether i'm a he or a she. That could sound a bit disturbing, depending on how you read it. But you get my gist. lol.

    October 13, 2012

  • ron

Sure Henry, we'll shuffle people around and see what they're comfortable with for now.

  • ron

Henry, I'll mail you the minutes of the discussion. You're still in. I need you to be an actor. You did good when you were a model last March.

i didn't realise this was that 2moro was actual date for the meet =S thought initially it was just a place-holder. unfortunately it clashes with my tennis clinic, so cant attend. I'm still willing to assist where ever i maybe of use, should a spare pair of hands be needed!

  • Janis

Thx for explaining the detail Ron. Will bring along it then. Cu tmr ;)

Hi Janis. This is a brainstorm session on the storyline and a check on the cameras. I've uploaded the pdf file in our 'files' section. I'll bring some extra copies if you can't find it here. Do bring your DSLR cameras that can shoot video. Like the Nikon D7000 or Canon 60D, 7D, etc. I have some videos to show at the meeting tomorrow. The filming starts the moment we all know what we'll be doing.
I'll designate each person's role in the movie.
    Some will be:
    1. Camera Man
    2. Lighting Assistants
    3. Actors/Actresses
    4. Make up Artist
    5. Director
    6. Director of Photography
    7. Production Designer
    8. Storyboard Artist
    9 Editor
    etc.

    October 13, 2012

  • Janis

Is camera required at this meeting?

  • Carol

ron, may i log in google to see the written story now?

    October 12, 2012

  • Bani C.

Thanks for your keen interest. I've kept d storyline simple but dramatic to facilitate production. Really sorry I have to skip this meetup due to urgent matters but I encourage everyone to come. We need everyone's help to pull this through. Plus it'll be a fun n great learning experience.

    October 11, 2012

  • ron

Patty, bring a notebook or iPad. We'll go through the storyboard and brainstorm. I've sent you an email. It's to log into Google Docs where Bani has written the story. The photos we're using are also there.

    October 10, 2012

  • Patty

I'm excited to join this event. It's new for me. What should I prepare/bring on Sat and what time will be finished?

    October 10, 2012

  • ron

Patty, no change in the date. It's still on this Saturday. Bani has written the screenplay already. I'll draw the storyboard up and present it when we meet. I'll send this to Tom L as he may be away.

    October 10, 2012

  • Patty

Hi Ron, the date of this event would be changed?

    October 10, 2012

  • Tom L

    OK, have un-un-RSVP'd again...Cheers, Tom

    October 6, 2012

  • ron

No problem, Tom. It's not really set on that date. I've chosen the photos and given them to Bani to write the screenplay. Until that is done, I may shift the Event date 2 weeks later.ill inform everyone of any changes.

    October 6, 2012

  • Tom L

Ron, I may need to travel to China that weekend, so I will un-RSVP now to let any other interested videographer attend. If my plans change, I hope I can still join as an observer...
    Cheers, Tom

I've uploaded a new video on Magic Lantern for Canon EOS DSLR users. Don't install Magic Lantern unless you know what you're doing.

    September 27, 2012

  • ron

There's another installer that Movie guys should know. Magic Lantern.
This is a firmware hack for Canon EOS cameras. It provides a lot of control when shooting in Video Mode.
I can't install on my Canon 7D cos it's not ready. But those with
    5D mark II
    50D
    60D
    500D
    550D
    600D
    can install it.
Go here to check it out.

This info is for people who use Canon DSLR cameras. Most Canon EOS cameras can use this picture style. Note that this picturestyle is only used for shooting in Movie Mode.
Technicolor's CineStyle Profile - A FREE download that boosts the dynamic range in your camera.
An increase in dynamic range allows your camera to see like your eye was made to.
The CineStyle profile allows you to shoot footage with greater detail in both the highlights and shadows of your subject matter.
    Go here to get it.
    http://www.technicolor.com/en/hi/theatrical/visual-post-production/digital-printer-lights/cinestyle

    September 27, 2012

    • ron

I already installed this picturestyle profile to my Canon 7D. During post production, it gives me more latitude when editing color high lights and shadows. It only looks very flat with less color while shooting. But great for editing.

      September 27, 2012

  • Patty

    Got it...thanks Ron

    September 21, 2012

  • ron

Hi Patty. Go to the top of this page and look for the section 'PHOTOS'. Click on it and you'll see the DSLR Movie Production album. You can add photos there.

    September 21, 2012

  • Patty

Hi Ron, I would like to upload pics but can't find the "Add Photos" button here.

    September 21, 2012

  • Tom L

Sounds good, as personally I don't have any experience using a DSLR for video... happy to do the BTS documentary and learn by observation of others shooting the footage...

    September 16, 2012

  • ron

And, .... sorry, I just woke up and brain is not at full functioning condition yet. There'll be a few brainstorming sessions for the storyline. There'll be more brainstorming on how to shoot the sequences and what equipment we need to have. It's possible that all the sequences can be shot in 1 day by 10 different teams in separate locations.

    September 16, 2012

  • ron

Tom, sorry i forgot to answer your first question. We'll meet only when we have a story to shoot. That means I will draw up a story board for each team of shooters.

    September 16, 2012

  • ron

I agree, Tom. We first need a fairly large number of images for selection. When the best 100 photos are selected by votes or a panel of judges, we give them to our writer to choose 10 that he could weave a story out. Keep in mind that the writer has to create glimpses of the chosen photos in the movie. Three challenges here. The writer has many potential directions to take the script based on the photos. That's the first. The second challenge is filming the scenes. Final challenge is editing all the footage into a movie.

    September 16, 2012

  • Tom L

Hi Ron, not sure of the plan, however as this is a new type of meetup event, perhaps we can have a non shoot meeting to review the process and shortlisted images, see what we need, and how the shoot might work in general.. Cheers, Tom

    September 16, 2012

  • ron

Guys, you can also submit your photos into our JPG Facebook page. Go to Facebook and join JPG Just Photography Group Meetup.

    September 14, 2012

  • ron

All the good photos will be useful. I have no story in mind yet, Tom. We'll look at every submitted photo and choose like 100 of the best ones. Then we separate into groups of 10 photos and see if we can weave a story out of just 1 group.
The biggest task, I think, is making a live video of each scene from the photos. Let's hope my video special effects skills don't suck.

    September 12, 2012

    • ron

We may, for example, exchange some photos from Groups 1 and 2 with Group 4. Once we have a certain start of a storyline, it will get easier to select photos based on the story. We need to create a beginning, middle and end to the story.

      September 12, 2012

    • ron

What I'm looking for is amazing photos first.

      September 12, 2012

  • Tom L

As before, I just uploaded a couple to the Meetup album. Others which might be useful and for your consideration located here:

Pls let me know if any would be useful, and I can upload to the Meetup page..

Go to Photos at the top of this page and look for DSLR Movie Production Event (Re-Post) photo album. Upload your photos there.
Because this event hasn't taken place yet, there's no way to upload photos from this page.
