Ready for a Dog Hike?
Leave your dog at home - they will be provided!
Join other hikers for a hike in the fields and woods with rescue dogs! Powhatan State Park, the newest state park, is bordered on two sides by the historic James River and has numerous hiking trails. We will volunteer to walk shelter dogs (human friendly and with all inoculations) who need some exercise and human contact. We can certainly provide both! Where else can you enjoy a great hike and provide such a great service all at the same time! After the hike, you will have the opportunity to have important one-on-one time with your new friend. (This is NOT an adoption event, but an exercise and give-some-love event.)
Here's what the local NBC affiliate reported on January 20, 2015:
Hike a Houlagan is a weekly event scheduled by Houlagans' Rest*, and they need hikers for their weekly dog walks. This is not an obedience class; it is about leash walking a rescue dog on a trail, gently correcting the dog, praising the dog, and helping the dog move forward.
The minimum age for a handler is 16. Younger children may accompany an adult and share in the fun of playing with the dogs.
THIS EVENT OCCURS EVERY SATURDAY, and they are always in need of dog hikers. If a meet-up is not posted, I encourage you to volunteer on your own by contacting Melanie at: [masked] to sign up.
Length: about 4 miles on mostly flat, easy trails.
- Water bowl and water for your dog.
- Completed forms (5 pages). You are required to complete and bring with you some paperwork, including a statement that you have not been convicted of animal cruelty. Repeat hikers do NOT need to complete the forms again. You can link to these forms here (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lbix3tfgml9g7fs/AAA-hKs5sueJ-jTFrdW_TR3Oa?dl=0). (Houlagans' Rest personnel bring extra blank forms. so if you forget to do this, come anyway and we will take care of this !)
DIRECTIONS: The official address of this new park is 4616 Powhatan State Park Road, but this new road is not yet on most maps or GPS systems. I recommend following the address in the address field above, which will take you very near the park entrance, or put these coordinates in your GPS:
latitude 37'[masked] longitude -77'[masked]
The park entrance is on Old River Trail west of it's intersection with Rt. 522, Maiden's Rd. There is a sign for the park on Rt. 522
There is a $4 parking fee unless you already have a VA State Park annual pass. Please have exact change or check, no attendant is on duty. Be sure to get the parking pass from the yellow box just past the entrance contact station and hang it on your mirror.
