Hike a shelter dog!
What can be better? Hike a Houlagans' Rest rescue dog, while visiting Powhatan State Park the newest state park, in the northwest corner of Powhatan County on the historic James River!
After enjoying a 2-3 mile hike, you will have an opportunity to visit with your new friend. This is NOT an adoption event or an obedience class, but an exercise and give-some-love event. This human interaction has resulted in several dogs being adopted!
The minimum age for a handler is 16. Younger children may accompany an adult and share in the fun of playing with the dogs.
SPECIAL NOTE: This hike is different from other hikes. If you decide not to attend another hike, it is of little consequence; but for this hike it means that a shelter dog was transported to the park and has to stay in a kennel on the bus because someone did not show up for the hike! So I hope that you understand how important it is when you make a commitment to this hike! Thanks.
The official address of this new park is 4616 Powhatan State Park Road, but if this road is not yet on your map or GPS systems, you can enter the following coordinates in your GPS:

Completed volunteer forms (5 pages), which includes a statement that you have not been convicted of animal cruelty. Repeat hikers do NOT need to complete the forms again. If possible, please complete them in advance. If you do forget them, Houlagans' Rest personnel will have extra forms.
THIS EVENT OCCURS EVERY SATURDAY, and they are always in need of dog hikers. If a meet-up is not posted, I encourage you to volunteer on your own by contacting Melanie at:[masked] to sign up.* Houlagans' Rest is a non-profit, no-kill, dog rescue of last resort in the Richmond area.
