Meteor: The Cost of Isomorphic JavaScript

Ongoing agenda:

6:30 - Food and merriment

7:00 - Lightning Talks

7:30 - Meteor: The Cost of Isomorphic JavaScript  (Tim Heckel)

Meteor is a full-stack platform, not a library. The 1.0 release is not for the faint of heart: it works best when you drink the kool aid and embrace the ecosystem, from its reactive programming mandate to its custom packaging system. Nothing if not opinionated, Meteor as a platform begs the question: what is the cost of adoption? For node.js purists, what are we leaving behind? What do we gain? Join us in a discussion of the merits of the platform, why it's amazing, and where its pain points emerge. Interspersing the presentation with code samples and years of personal experience, I hope to convey Meteor as worthy of adoption for beginners and expert JavaScript developers alike.

I idly went through the Meteor tutorial while the different talks were going on, and reached the end before the end of the talks. Surprisingly good introduction. Thanks so much to everyone who spoke tonight!

Bummed to have to cancel my RSVP the night before. I caught some nasty winter weather illness, and I'm sure no one wants to share. Hope you all have a great night though.

Unfortunately, the recording didn't pan out as Google Hangouts has recording issues while simultaneously connected to a projector WITH a display adapter (non-pure output) involved. Laaaaaame. :(

Is there really a meetup scheduled on Thanksgiving?

    • James G.

No, the months of November and December (and sometimes even October) almost always need to be rescheduled due to holidays... we just haven't gotten around to doing so yet, so thank you for the reminder!
