The Business of Making Music with Jazz Musician Bradford Hayes
We’re back! And we’re kicking off our relaunch with a focus on music makers. You’ve most likely have heard our esteemed guest speaker - jazz musician Bradford Hayes - play around town and beyond. Bradford has impressive experience performing and recording with some of jazz’s biggest names. (Read his full bio below.) We’re lucky to have him speak to us about Newark’s music scene, the music business, and resources for musicians. We’ll also have the treat of hearing him play! Of course, there will be time to ask your own questions and network. Whether you’re a musician, looking to break into the industry, or a music enthusiast, you’ll be sure to learn something new and be entertained. //Meet Bradford Hayes// Bradford Hayes, a native of Dinwiddie County, Virginia has been a force on the jazz scene for many years now. He has performed at a number of club, colleges and concert halls that include Birdland (NYC), L'Entrepot (Paris, FRANCE) and the Beacon Theater (NYC). Bradford has performed in different musical settings with Jimmy Heath, Al Grey, Cecil Payne, Rufus Reid, Ray Bryant, Ted Curson, Charles Davis, Joe Lee Wilson, Ben Riley, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Cecil Brooks III, Steve Colson, Kelvin Bell, Pheeroan Aklaff, Michael Cochrane, Nabaté Isles and Donald Braden. Bradford along with Javon Jackson, Hilton Ruiz, John Lee, and Bill Saxton was photographed by legendary jazz photographer William Gottlieb in what sadly turned out to be the last jazz photo taken by Mr. Gottlieb. This was the first photo of musicians taken by Mr. Gottlieb since 1948. In addition to this photo session Bradford and the other musicians selected, are also featured as part of a soon to be aired PBS documentary about Mr. Gottlieb. Bradford recently performed a series of concerts in collaboration with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra as well as a performance with Avant Garde Pianist Steve “Adegoke” Colson at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Mr. Hayes holds a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Music Education from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has also studied privately with George Coleman and Charles Davis. Bradford’s latest recording is entitled “The Jazz Life”. The CD features Michael Cochrane, Calvin Jones, Gregory Searvance, Duane Eubanks, and Cornell McGhee and is still receiving rave reviews. Bradford has also recorded 2 other CDs entitled “Bianca’s Dance” & “Our Fathers” and is also featured on a compilation CD released by BMG Direct entitled “A Jazz Discovery Showcase.” Bradford is also a NOBLE of the Mystic Shrine at Golconda Temple #24, Newark, NJ PHA, a brother of Samson Lodge #66 F&AM-PHA, Newark, NJ - 32°, a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Plainfield (NJ) Alumni Chapter, and a member of (ASCAP) American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Mr. Hayes has also recently retired as a successful music educator in the Newark (NJ) Public Schools after 31 years. According to Dorothaan Kirk at WBGO-FM in Newark, NJ, “Bradford is a musician who deserves more recognition."
