SPEAKER LINE-UP (ANNOUNCED 27 OCTOBER)
Presenter: Dr. Elias Willemse - Industrial Engineering Lecturer at University of Pretoria (LinkedIn (https://za.linkedin.com/in/eliasjw))
Talk: In general, models are developed for one of four purposes: decision automation, routine decision support, investigation and improvement, or to provide insight. As researchers and engineers we are often involved in the latter two. Elias will briefly delve into this messy world of building models for unique and once of type decision problems, and often developing a model just to understand something better; He will discus how R fits into their workflow; and, lastly, illustrate the R-side of two such projects.
Presenter: Dario Fanuchi - Technical Director at Isazi Consulting (LinkedIn (https://za.linkedin.com/in/dario-fanucchi-50a06021))
Talk: Rcpp is a remarkably simple and flexible interface between R and C++. When used properly, a few well placed lines of code can reduce the running time of a piece of analysis code in R often by as much as fifty or a hundred fold. Dario will discuss how he has used Rcpp in his projects and present some best practices in writing efficient code. He will briefly cover how he used Rcpp to speed up a telematics data engine and a movie scheduling algorithm, and then discuss in a bit more detail the creation of a nonlinear mixed effects R package that was used in a project by SACEMA to accurately estimate HIV incidence using bio marker data.
Presenter: Laing Lourens - Data Scientist at CSIR Meraka Institute (LinkedIn (https://za.linkedin.com/in/laing-lourens-7a723846))
Talk: Trachoma is the worldwide leading infectious cause of blindness. Nearly 20 years ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued the goal of eliminating trachoma induced blindness by the year 2020. Previous evidence has shown that targeted treatment to children less than 10 years of age is able to reduce prevalence across an entire community.Laing will be presenting a (Markov) model of trachoma transmission that assumes two age classes, as well as the results after this model was fitted to data obtained from a previous clinical trial.
Presenter: Alain Dormehl – Data Solutions Architect Microsoft (LinkedIn (https://za.linkedin.com/in/alain-dormehl-4469037b))
Talk: Alain will focus more on an introduction to the Microsoft Cortana Intelligence Suite and more specifically one the investments Microsoft has made to embrace R and incorporate it into the heart of our analytics story. Alain will show very short demos on how to use R in the Azure cloud and share some of the roadmap for R looking forward to additional innovation in this space.
