  • Johannesburg Fishackathon [Partner Event]

    • What we'll do Disclaimer - This event will be hosted by our partner: HackerNest. RSVPing on this Meetup will not guarantee you entrance to this event, please RSVP here: https://hackernest.com/events/johannesburg-south-africa-fishackathon-2018 Challenge Sets: Our work-in-progress challenges are real-world problems sourced from industry and government: solve them and you'll help millions. They are guidelines; participants may work on any project that fits one of our 3 themes: Sustainability Overfishing, pollution, and other hazards threaten the extinction of marine species and throw off our ecological balance. Enforcement Agencies often lack resources to effectively enforce regulations. This results in environmental damage and significant inequity. Marketplace Poor data access puts small players at a disadvantage and hinders firms from making smart, socially responsible decisions. Fishackathon is an epic partnership between the U.S. Department of State and HackerNest in dozens of cities around the world that seeks to make Earth's waters, aquaculture, and fisheries more sustainable and equitable. Demos and Judging Teams have 3 minutes to demo. Cities may have multiple local prizes available, but only 1 "city winner" team moves forward to the global finals from each city. These teams have 7 days to submit a 3-minute demo video (in English OR with English subtitles) for global judging. [#PROTIP] Strong demos usually answer at least these first 4 questions: 1. Who does your project benefit; who are the main users? 2. What problem are you solving? 3. What is your solution? 4. What does a successful outcome look like; what impact will it have? Judging criteria: - impact (how will this improve things?) - practicality (can it be implemented, is it adoptable?) - creativity and technical innovation (how cool is this?) - polish (how well-put-together is the team/demo?) Global Prizing Our prizing is geared towards helping teams succeed by getting their product to market. We are finalizing partnerships for the following: - acceptance into a prestigious incubator/accelerator - mentorship from/intros to potential investors - demo spot at a major conference - useful prizes from AWS Rules 1. We're all in this together; treat each other as such. 2. Teams may have up to 5 people. 3. You must participate in the event in person. 4. Fresh code only, but hardware may be pre-built (i.e. phones = hardware). 5. Follow the HackerNest Code of Conduct. • What to bring • Important to know
